GERALDINE

MINIATURE RIFLE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL MEETING In the absence of the president (Mr K. Quaid), Mr J. Pifield was elected chairman at the annual meeting of the Geraldine County Miniature Rifle Associatfbn, held in Mr T. J. Paterson’s office. There was a large attendance of delegates. The committee’s annual report stated that during the year the Association had suffered a severe loss in the death of the secretary, Mr John Kennedy, Mr Kennedy had taken a very keen interest in the affairs of the Association, and the members extended their sincere sympathy to Mrs Kennedy and family. Competitions during the year had been keenly contested, seven women’s and 34 men’s teams, a total of 41, competing, compared with 38 in the previous year. The arrangements for the final shoot had been very complete, and all the teams had been able to shoot at the Town Hall, instead of at two ranges as in previous years. The committee congratulated the winners on their splendid shooting. The competition for the Challenge Cup given by Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., had been keen. The Hilton Club (holders of the Cup) had been challenged seven times, but on each occasion had put up splendid scores and retained the trophy. A team from the Association had journeyed to Cave to fire a friendly match against the Mackenzie County Association, and this had been much enjoyed by all. The finances were in a healthy state and the year had commenced with an actual balance of £4/7/9. This year, after allowing for payment of two outstanding accounts, the Association would commence with £7/13/10 in hand. In conclusion the committee wished to thank the secretary, target checkers, and all those who had assisted in any way to make the competitions such a success. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman paid a tribute to the sterling services rendered to the Association by Mr Kennedy. The sympathy of all the members was extended to the relatives. Continuing, Mr Pifield remarked that the balance sheet showed that the Association was in a sound financial position, and as some of the clubs had increased their membership, he anticipated that the Association would have a good year during the forthcoming season. Mr F. E. South, who seconded the motion, endorsed the chairman’s remarks, and expressed pleasure that the finances had improved slightly since the previous year. The motion was carried. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted as follow: Patron, Mr K. Mackenzie; president, Mr O. S. Priest; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Bennett, G. Cain (Woodbury), Alf Earl; committee, Mesdames J. Wordsworth, W. J. Jackson, F. E. South, T. Hughes, and Miss Mason (Temuka Ladies’ Club and Peel Forest Ladies’ Clubs’ representatives to be elected later), Messrs Alf Earl, W. S. Crotty, W. S. Stonehouse, H. Mallinson, G. Cain, W. M. Patrick, L. Beattie, J. Fifield, H. Cain, D. Cain, A. Bryant, J. Bennett; target checkers, Messrs H. H, Cain, F. E. South, J. R. Lack; selectors of representative teams, Messrs V. Nicholas, L. Beattie, and F. E. South; secretary, Mr T. J. Paterson; treasurer, Mr F. E. South. The secretary of the South Island Miniature Rifle Association (Mr M. Higgins, Timaru), wrote stating that the president of his Association had received a letter from one of the clubs in this district advocating the adoption of the nine bull target for general use in all competitions. He had been instructed to write to all the Associations asking if they would be good enough to ascertain the feeling of the clubs in their respective districts regarding the adoption, or otherwise, of the nine-bull target as a standard. Mr J. Bennett moved, and Mr E. Barker seconded, “that this Association is in favour of retaining the old style of target.” The motion was carried. The Winchester Ladies’ Club wrote in regard to the cost of engraving the winning club’s name on the Hanmer Morrison Cup. It was agreed that all engraving on challenge cups be carried out by the Association; also that targets be marked on the cut through system. The grading was fixed as follows: A grade, over 77; B grade over 74; C grade under 74 (three out of the eight last shoots to be discarded). It was decided that clubs that had not fired five shoots during the season be graded on their first two shoots in the competition. The dates for the competition shoots were fixed as follow: First shoot, from July 29 to August 3; second shoot, August 19 to August 26; final shoot, September 6. Mr D. G. Cain brought up the question of allowing the Ealing Club to compete in the competition. It was pointed out that the competition was conducted by the Geraldine County Association and the Ealing Club was therefore not eligible to compete. The meeting agreed that the T. D. Burnett Challenge Cup competition be run on the same conditions as last year. On the motion of Mr F. E. South, a vote of thanks was extended to Mr K. Quaid in appreciation of his services as president during the year.

CAREW JUBILEE FUNCTION Numerous parents and friends assembled at the Carew School on Friday afternoon for the ceremony conducted by the School Committee and the scholars to commemorate the Royal Silver Jubilee.
