TOWN AND COUNTRY ITEMS

OAMARU, May 14. Personal: Mr F. H. Fearnley, formerly sergeant in charge of the Oamaru Police Force, and Mrs Fearnley have left Oamaru for Epsom, Auckland, where they will take up residence. Memorial Unveiled: There was a large congregation at the Newborough Church Room on Sunday morning, when Archdeacon Russell conducted the King’s jubilee service, the lesson being read by Mr J. E. S. Newson. The archdeacon then unveiled a handsome brass tablet to the memory of the Rev. D. Jamieson, and spoke most appreciatively of his long ministry of nearly 19 years at Newborough and in St. Lvike’s parish. Parishioners had subscribed most readily to the tablet, which was placed close to the spot where he had preached so ably and earnestly for so long a period. The inscription reads: “To the glory of God, in memory of Rev. David J;. ieson, M.A. Assistant Curate in this Parish 1907-1926. Eloquent preacher, ripe scholar, faithful pastor.”

Unemployment: The Mayor (Mr M. F." E. Cooney) presided at the weekly meeting of the Oamaru Unemployment Committee. The certifying officer (Mr C. F. Thompson) reported that there were 310 relief workers on the books last week, new applications numbered 17, two were removed, leaving 325 this week.

Rugby Union: The Management Committee of the North Otago Rugby Union met last night. Mr A. Gilchrist (president) occupied the chair. Mr J. Palmer occupied the chair. Mr J. Palmdr reported on the views expressed by the Referees’ Association in reference to the expenses of country referees travelling to control Town v. Country club matches. Mr Palmer pointed out that country referees could travel with country teams to ftiwn. This had been placed before the Country Association. The Referees’ Association drew attention to the inconvenience caused through clubs failing to notify the ass’ociation of defaults and to the encroachment of spectators on the playing areas. The use of the side lines by coaches was being abused, and there was a lack of uniformity In football dress in the lower grades.—The secretary was directed to reply that clubs had been warned, and attention had been drawn to the default rule. Arrangements were being made to wire off the playing areas. It was decided to advise clubs that in matches under the control of the union only official line umpires and ball boys would be allowed on the side lines and that players must turn out in uniform dress. The Otago Union confirmed July 31 as the date of the Otago üb-union team v. North Otago at Dunedin. Mr W. Pearson had been appointed a selector of the Otago, Southland and North Otago combined team. —It was decided that the name of the North Otago selector and the date of the meeting at Dunedin be obtained and forwarded to the Otago Union. A request from the Waimate Subunion for a representative match at Waimate was held over in the meantime.
