TWO WISE OWLS
AN ATTRACTIVE PRESENT FOR MOTHER
You have all heard the verse about the wise old owl who saw a great deal and said little. Mr Owl and his wife make a very attractive present for mother, and look very jolly perching above the mantelpiece or bookshelf. You will need a woollen stocking of a nice brown shade, about a yard of brown ribbon an inch in width, a small piece of white material, four black boot buttons, and a piece of dried twig.
Take the stocking, lay it flat, and cut away the back seam so that your material, as it lies doubled, is about three inches wide. Run up another seam along the edge. Now cut off the foot and about six inches of the leg, this piece bind round and round with odds and ends, making the bag plumper towards the tied end. Leave an
inch and a half at the open end, then bind it, too, with silk. Now the article looks like a bon-bon. Divide the gathered top into two sections with scissors and trim them to look like feathers, binding them in position with silk. Trim the lower gathered end to look like tail feathers. Now we make the large round eyes. Take your ribbon and cut off two 12in lengths. Run r draw thread down one side of each and pull into rosettes. From the white material cut two circles the size of a shilling. Stitch one white circle into the centre of each rosette, and in the centre of the White sew a button. Now attach the rosettes to the stuffed body just below the head feathers, and you will have a lovely owl. Make Mrs Owl a little smaller than her husband. Sit them close together on the twig, securing them to it by loops of brown silk to imitate claws, and steadying them by stitching to their backs the cord from which they are to hang. If desired the owls may be made with brown crepe paper with equal success.
