ST. JOHN’S CHURCH

ANNUAL MEETING OF PARISHIONERS COUNCIL’S REPORT The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. John’s Church, Highfield, was held last evening, the Rev. J. Evans presiding over a large attendance. Annual Report “In reviewing the past j T ear at S. John’s, one finds it difficult to present a complete report,” said the Council. The changes that have taken place make the omission of certain details almost inevitable, and therefore we would beg your forbearance for all that may be lacking. The illness of the vicar was unfortunate and upset the working of the whole parish, but as it was unforeseen and unavoidable, we must just make the best of it and work harder than ever this coming year. We are glad to report that S. John’s almost reached its assessment, which was largely due to the substantial contribution of £SO by the Ladies’ Guild. The work of this organisation has again been carried on admirably under the leadership of Mrs Huddleston, who for many years now has given herself with whole-hearted enthusiasm to this work. ’ Unfortunately the day fixed for the culminating effort of the year’s work turned out wet, and consequently the financial returns were not so good as they otherwise would have been. “The Sunday School work has been efficiently carried on under Mr Ruston’s supervision, but he is sadly in need of more teachers to help him, and we would urge you to make a special effort to maintain the high standard that has always been set at S. John’s. We take this opportunity of again thanking Mr Ruston and his helpers for carrying on under such handicaps. An important branch of the youth work at St. John’s is the senior and junior girls’ Bible classes, so ably led by Miss Stubbs and Mrs R. L. Wigley, and assisted by Miss Gordon. This work has for several years been remarkable, chiefly owing to the enthusiasm, self sacrifice, and efficiency of the leaders. Last year, besides giving to missions, S. Saviour’s, vicar’s Christmas cheer fund, and others, they contributed £5 to help S. John’s reach its quota, and are deserving of hearty congratulations for their good work. “The services have, on the whole, been well attended, especially the family service, and our appreciation is due to the choir so ably directed by Mr Shirtcliff. The evening service reinstituted last September, has proved that there was a definite need in that direction. S. John’s branch of the Mothers' Union, led by Mrs Monaghan, has met regularly during the past year, and has steadily grown. This year we are sure the members will rally round Mrs Evans and continue the good work. Every branch of the Christian Church at home has its Missionary Guild—a society which tends to counteract the danger of concerning ourselves wholly with our own affairs. S. John’s is not lacking in this respect, and the good work being done by the Missionary Guild deserves greater support by one and all. “Last year by special efforts money was raised and a gas heater installed in the church, which was a great improvement on the old coal stove. To give adequate warmth during the winter months another such heater is required. We hope the incoming council will take the matter in hand. S. Mary’s vestry would help with the cost, if an effort is made. We would like to record our appreciation for the faithful service of Miss Sharpe and assistants in attending so zealously to altar linen, decorations, etc. Their work has always been most willingly and scrupulously performed. In conclusion we would like to thank all councillors, servers, Sunday school and Bible class teachers, and all others who have helped the work at S. John’s during the year, and we feel confident that this coming year, you will give your hearty support and help to Mr Dunnage.” Council Elected The following council was elected:—* Mrs Newton, Mrs Huddleston, Messrs Williamson, Palliser, Wright, Lomas, Walton, Romans, Unwin, Price, Buchanan.
