SOUTH CANTERBURY UNION COMMITTEE MEETING The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Union was held last night. Present: Messrs A. G. Knowles (chairman), A. Aitken, A. B. Rowlands, M. Angland, W. Keinan, J. Penny cook, C. L. Cutler and J. Lillico. The Southland Rugby Union replied to the invitation for its representative team to play in Timaru on its tour north, and asked if a grant against hotel and Other expenses incurred would be made. It was suggested that satisfactory arrangements could possibly be made while the delegates from the Southland and South Canterbury Unions were attending the annual meeting of the New Zealand Union in Wellington.—The Union’s delegate (Mr Knowles) was authorised to make the best arrangements possible, with a special endeavour to secure the match for a Saturday. The Permit Committee advised that the following applications for regrading from the Zingari Club had been granted: L. Ennis and K. Caird, from senior to junior; D. Blair and I. Thompson, from junior to fourth grade. Point’s Withdrawal The Pleasant Point Club wrote stating that, owing to the number of players who had left the district and to the difficulty of others regarding leave for play, it had been found impossible to field a senior team this year. The Club regretted the position, and thanked the Union for the consideration shown during the last two seasons. Two new teams had been fielded on Saturday, junior and fourth grade, so that the Club’s prospects for the future remained bright. Mr Pennycook asked what the position was in regard to clubs entering senior teams?
Mr Lillico: Any affiliated club can enter a senior team and we cannot stop them. The chairman: Point’s withdrawal is a pity in a way, as it gives a bye in the senior competition. Pleasant Point’s withdrawal was accepted with regret. The Pleasant Point Club made application for L. Anderson and S. Wilson to be regraded from senior to junior.—Referred to Permit Committee. With further reference to the proposed combined match, South Canterbury and Ashburton v. Canterbury, the Ashburton Union wrote suggesting that possibly this match could be arranged to be held at Ashburton on May 18, the Saturday previous to the All Black trial at Dunedin.—The secretary replied that no reply had been received as yet from the Canterbury Rugby Union. Town v. Country. In regard to the Town v. Country match next Monday, Mr Angland submitted a recommendation from the Selection Committee that the Country team be selected from the country clubs in the Union’s competition and also from Mackenzie and Waimate Sub-Unions, the Town team to be selected solely from members of the four town clubs.—The matter was left in the hands of the selectors, the secretary to communicate with the Sub-Unions. The secretary reported that complaints had been received regarding late starting of games. Members spoke in support, quoting instances, and it was decided to write to the clubs asking for co-operation, otherwise drastic action would have to be considered.
