A protest against Valpai after his victory in the Hobsonville Hurdles was dismissed by the judicial committee of the Avondale Jockey Club. The protest was entered by Mr G. Hodgson, owner of the second horse, Thespis, under rule 8. clause B of the Rules of Racing, covering restrictions on the granting of gentlemen rider certificates.
Rule 88 states that no gentleman rider’s certificate shall be granted to any person who is or has at any time been engaged in a livery stable, or who Is or has at any time been directly or indirectly engaged in the business of training or riding horses. It was alleged that the winning rider, Mr J. Muir, had been engaged in training horses, including Valpai and Illuminagh. Mr Muir stated that he had been associated with the working of the horses, and had also made a trip to Dargaville with them, but had .received no remuneration, having made the journey for the sport. The decision to dismiss the protest was made unanimously.
Most of the season’s three-year-olds are to continue racing, and there may be revelations of form that will alter the position, but so far as the season has gone, and taking both classic and handicap performances into consideration, it is difficult to withhold premier honours from Gay Blonde. The Gay Shield filly’s wins include the Great Northern Guineas, Avondale Guineas, Railway Handicap, Great Northern Derby, Great Northern Oaks, and several handicaps. Her sole defeat by one of her own age was in the King’s Plate by Synagogue, and she took revenge in the Derby. In the spring Sporting Blood followed up a win in the Liverpool Handicap at Auckland by winning the Harcourt Cup, the Riccarton Handicap, the Derby, and the Canterbury Cup, and was acclaimed as the colt of the year. In addition he won the New Zealand St. Leger, but Gay Blonde defeated him each time they meet—in the Great Northern Guineas, Railway Handicap, and Derby—and has shown no lapses in form. Synagogue defeated Gay Blonde in the King’s Plate, but the positions were reversed in the Derby, and Gay Blonde accounted for Kelly each time they meet. At this stage, Gay Blonde’s most dangerous three-year-old opponent might be Tauramai. The Southlander was outclassed by Sporting Blood and Synagogue at Riccarton in November, but he was then green and undeveloped, and in the autumn he won the Dunedin Cup and the Great Autumn. The question is unlikely to be settled, but it appears that Gay Blonde, and Tauramai or Sporting Blood are the best of their age. Synagogue is in Australia, and Is left out of present calculations.
