EFFORT TO RESCUE FRIEND By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. In an effort to rescue a friend who had fallen over a bank close to the edge of a precipice near the Bealey Hotel yesterday, John Sutherland, married, of Christchurch, himself fell over the precipice and was killed. A party of five men were working on the approach to the new Bealey Bridge over the Waimakariri River at Bealey. They were returning to their camp after collecting mails and stores at the hotel. It was dark, and one of their number, Charles Jamieson, tripped and fUI over a bank. Sutherland crawled dr’n to rescue-him, but in the darkness did not see the edge of the precipice and fell over a drop of 150 feet to the bed of the river below. Sutherland’s neck was broken. The body was recovered some hours later. Jamieson was helped by his other companions. He was almost unhurt, suffering only from a few bruises and abrasions and shock.
