GERALDINE

THE COMING RUGBY SEASON CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Geraldine Football Club was held in the Town Hall Mr W. H. Jackson presiding over an attendance of about 30 members. The adoption of the annual report and balance sheet-sheet (previously published) was moved by Messers L. Neutze and I. Anderson. In reply to a question by Mr J. Cairns in regard to an amount of £6 8s 7d expended on grounds, the hon. treasurer (Mr R. L. Hayes) explained that £3 5s of that amount had been paid out in wages, £1 2s 6d had been spent in the purchase of wire, and the remainder had been expended for sundries such as flags, lime, etc. The chairman remarked that the expenditure had been chiefly due to the fact that the Club had tried to get the No. 2 playing ground put in order. Mr Neutze, who asked a question in regard to players’ equipment, was informed that three footballs had been purchased last year at a cost of £4 2s 6d and several jerseys and other items had also been bought. The chairman said that the chief expenditure had been for the three balls. However, the Club still had three or four balls in good condition, so there would not be that expense during the coming season. In reply to Mr Cairns, the chairman stated that £l4 8s 5d had been paid to the South Canterbury Rugby Union last season. The amount included insurances £7 7s, entry fees and affiliation £3 3s, and 10 per cent, of the gate takings approximately £2, and seven-a-side tournament £2 2s. The chairman intimated that donatons of £1 and of 10/6 had been received that evening, which was very encouraging. The motion was carried unanimously. The secretary was instructed to write thanking the delegates to the South Canterbury Rugby Union (Messrs A. H. Clemens and B. Gresham) or their services. Appreciation was also expressed of the services of the Club’s hon. surgeon, Dr. L. C. Mail. Election of Officers The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr A. G. Macdonald; president, Mr W. H. Jackson; vice-presi-dents, Rev. Father M. J. Fogarty; Dr. L. C. Mail, Messrs R. Morrison. H. Morrison, R. P. Craig, J. R. Lack, M. Williams, C. S. Davies, D. G. Cain, J. Brenton, J. Barrett senr., A. Neutze and E. Wood to instruct the Club’s delegates to support Zingari’s notice of motion to the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Rugby Union: “That to Rule 50 the following clause be added: ‘The findings of the Permit Committee shall at all times be submitted to the Management Committee for confirmation before becoming effective.’ ” The delegates were given a free hand in regard to voting on remits from the Temuka, Pleasant Point, and St. Andrew’s Clubs. Entering of Teams In referring to the entering of teams for the coming season, the chairman remarked that all the lower grade teams had had difficulty in fielding a full team, even in the home matches. The position had been so bad that those responsible for the teams felt that it had taken away all their pleasure in the games. The Club would have to give the matter serious consideration. In fact, some of the players had the idea that they were doing the chairman and the committee a great favour by playing, but if that spirit developed it would be best to let the committee resign and the players do the job themselves Mr Neutze: Some of the players would not have minded if the Committee had given them “a few bob” to play. (Laughter.) Mr J. Stevenson remarked that if the proposal to adopt Saturday as the weekly half-day were carried it wouid make all the difference. Half the tradespeople never saw a game. After discussing the question in committee the meeting unanimously recommended to the committee that a senior team, and one or two lower grade teams be entered in this year’s competitions. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the Committee that the subscriptions be slightly increased. A comprehensive vote of thanks to supporters and to Mr C. C. Knight for the use of his room, was carried unanimously. It was decided to hold the opening practice on April 13. Before closing the meeting the chairman expressed appreciation of the increased enthusiasm, and of the presence of the older supporters of the Club. A short meeting of the newly elected committee was then held, when it was decided that members should ascertain the number of prospective players, and that the committee should meet on April 2. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The president (Miss M. Cruickshank), occupied the chair at a meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Women’s Institute when the following additional officers were appointed: Vice-presidents, Mesdames A. G. Brown and L. S. King; secretary, Mrs P. Russell; assistant-secretary, Mrs H. V. Firman; treasurer, Mrs J. H. Lewis; Press correspondents, Mrs B. Hayes and Miss C. Kidd. BASKETBALL A meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Basketball Club was held on Friday night when the prospects for the coming season were reviewed. It was stated that it would probably be possible to run two or three teams, and it was decided to ascertain before the annual meeting if it would be possible to enter a senior grade team in the Temuka Basketball Association’s competition. It was decided to forward 10/- to the Geraldine District Hight School Committee, and to ask for the use of the grounds again this year. A sub-committee consisting of Misses C. Davies, R. Glover, C.
