GERALDINE
DISTRICT CRIBBAGE ASSOCIATION SUCCESSFUL SEASON The committee of the Geraldine District Cribbage Association, in its annual report, says that the season proved most successful, six teams taking part in the competition. Ten rounds were played, the results being as follow:—Geraldine Citizens 281, Orari Bridge 274, Raukapuka 261, Geraldine Bowlers 258, Oddfellows 224, and South End 216. Owing to the generosity of Mr H. W. W. Williamson, who gave a handsome silver cup in memory of his father, a doubles competition was inaugurated, and subsequently proved a great success. The cup was awarded to the pair scoring most games during the season, and was won by Messrs A. L. Brenton and T. Twigg, of the Citizens’ team, with a total of 77. The finances were satisfactory, there being a credit balance of £l/4/4. In conclusion the committee thanked the caterers for their kindness during the season. Miss F. Williamson and Mr G. Watts for the use of rooms, and all those who had helped in any way to make the season so successful.
CROQUET CLUB COMPETITIONS The following are the results of the handicap singles competition conducted by the Geraldine Croquet Club to date:—W. H. Kirk (2i), 9 wins, no losses; Mrs W. H. Kirk (2i), 7-3; Mrs G. Knibb (8), 5-3; Miss Marshall 17), 2-2; Mrs S. Webb (8), 2-2; Mrs C. Stock (6), 6-3; Mrs H. S. Ellis (81), 8-3; Mrs D. C, Williamson (10), 8-5; Mrs R. Patrick, 1-6. The handicap doubles results are:— Mesdames B. Hayes and E. E. Fairhall, 3 losses; Mesdames W. H, Broad and R. Patrick, 3 wins, 1 loss; Mesdames S. Webb and J. H. Woolhouse, 1 loss; Mesdames G. Knibb and W. A. Sherratt, 2 wins, 1 loss; Mesdames W. Grindell and H. S. Ellis, 1 win, 2 losses; Mesdames Jenkins and C. Stock, 3 wins, 1 loss. The following won silver buttons for the season:—A grade, Mrs W. H. Kirk; B grade, Miss Marshall; C grade, Mrs S. Webb, No matches have yet been played in the senior championship. In the junior, Mrs Jenkins beat Mrs W. Grindell, 26-14. The intermediate matches resulted:—Mrs C. Stock beat Mrs C. Knibb, 26-22; Mrs G. Knibb beat Mrs H. S. Ellis, 26-22; M n H. S, Ellis beat Mrs C. Stock, 26-20; Mrs H. S. Ellis beat Mrs S. Webb, 26-16; Mrs H. S. Ellis beat Mrs F. H. P. Wallach, 26-12. PERSONAL Miss E. Cain, who has been the guest of Mrs P. F. Russell, Talbot Street, returned to Leeston yesterday. Nurse T. Patrick, Christchurch, is spending a few days as the guest of Mrs G. Patrick, Talbot Street. Mr J. S. Clyne has returned from a visit to Oamaru. Mr D. H. Williams, who has been relieving at the Methven branch of the Bank of New Zealand, has returned to Geraldine. Mrs G. F. Lysaght, Ashburton, who has been spending a short holiday with Mrs M. Lysaght, Coach Road, will return home to-morrow. “EVERGREEN” A Gaumont British romantic comedy with music, "Evergreen,” featuring Jessie Matthews, and based on C. B. Cochran’s successful stage production of a few years ago, will be screened at the Municipal Theatre to-night and Monday night at 8 o’clock. Jessie Matthews appears in the part she played in the stage production, investing it with her compelling charm and revealing her distinct flair for the dramatic. She is given her big opportunities in the piquant situations provided by the story, sings delightful numbers and dances with that lissom grace for which she is famed. The picture marks the return to the screen of Betty Balfour, whose photographic appeal is undiminished and she retains the vivacity that contributed to much of her former popularity. Entertaining variety supports will be held. The annual meeting of the Geraldine District Cribbage Association will be held on Monday at 8 p.m. A kitchen evening in honour of Miss Mary Robinson will be held in the Te Moana School next Friday at 8 p.m. j The Rev. A. C. Lawry will be the | preacher at the harvest thanksgiving services at the Methodist Church tomorrow at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The annual sale of work will be held in the Parish Hall next Wednesday. The Mayor of Geraldine (Mr B. R. Macdonald) invites business people to close at 11 a.m. next Thursday, on account of the Temuka and Geraldine A. and P. Association’s Show. Entries for the Geraldine Collie Club’s trials, to be held on Messrs Blair Bros.’ property, Peel Forest, on April 4 and 5, will close next Thursday. Two challenge cups, Mr T. D. Burnett’s special, and other trophies will be offered for competition. The Hilton Tennis Club will hold a dance in the Hilton Hall on Thursday, April 4.
