ACCUSED OF RED ACTIVITIES AMERICANS REQUEST DEPORTATION United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received March 22, 7.35 p.m.) CHICAGO, March 21. Mr Evelyn Strachey, the English author who is suspected of Communist activities, appeared before the Immigration Board to-day for the formal deportation hearing, the report of which will be forwarded to the Department of Labour in Washington, for final decision. Questioners read from Strachey’s writings, and attempted to show that he believed in the violent overthrow of government. They also quoted from the writings of Marx Engels, requesting Strachey to comment pn them. His defence was that while lie was a believer in Communism, he was not a member of the Party. He never urged violence in any of his American lectures. He will be allowed a more detailed defence at the hearing tomorrow.
