George Arthur Brest, better known by his screen name of George Arthur who was formerly a British stage comedian, was arrested upon arrival from Nassau to-day, on a charge of stealing a valuable bracelet from Stephen Rophael, the London banker in Cannes.
According to the police, the information against Arthur was supplied by a New York society woman, who on the request of Arthur, and not knowing it was stolen property, brought the bracelet to America and later gave it to him.
Arthur is held under a technical indictment of smuggling, although he may be deported to France to stand his trial for theft.
Arthur gained considerable prominence in silent motion pictures. He teamed with the late Karl Dane, but since the talkies he has been inactive.
