The Acting-Prime Minister (Dr. Earle Page), in reiterating the Commonwealth Government’s opposition to a restriction of meat exports, informed the House of Representatives that last year 3000 tons of Australian chilled beef were shipped to the United Kingdom, while this year, if the trade was unhampered, shipments would be upwards of 15,000 tons.
Dr. Page also pointed out that the increased concentration on mutton breeds of sheep had come to stay. He anticipated sustained and moderate development of fat lamb production. The Government considered that the provisions of the Ottawa Agreement, read with those of the Anglo-Argentine Agreement, protected Australia against any drastic restriction. However, should occasion arise the Government would not hesitate to organise the producers in their own interests.
