TRADE IN PACIFIC
COMPREHENSIVE TOUR Information has been received by the Wellington office of Messrs Thos. Cook and Son of the visit to New Zealand shortly of the largest trade delegation that has ever left Japan for Australia and New Zealand. This delegation, which will number between 15 and 20 representative business men of Japan, has been organised by the “Osaka Mainichi and Tokyo Nichi Nicbi,” a daily newspaper with a 2,000,000 circulation, printed in both Japanese and English. These countries of the southern Pacific already form a lucrative market for Japanese goods, and possibly it is with the view of further developing that trade that the delegation has been arranged. “The “Osaka Mainichi” does not seek to disguise the nature of the visit, and its possible effects. Its issue of January 11 says;— “The Pacific era is coming—indeed, it is already here. The focus of world attention is fixed on the Pacific. Events of importance are developing in the countries bound by the greatest ocean. Whether we will it or not, Japan is destined to play a leading role in the gigantic drama on this vast stage. Are we ready to play our roles well? Keenly realising the urgency of promoting knowledge of the Pacific regions the “Osaka Mainichi and Tokyo Nichi Nichi” proposes to organise an economic touring party to visit the key points in the Pacific basin. Last year the "Mainichi" organised an economic touring party which visited the Philippines, Java, India, Persia, Arabia, the Balkan States and Europe. The trip was successful, and the party returned with a rich knowledge of trade conditions in the extensive area covered by that journey. “As all previous trips were perfectly successful, that in itself is strong assurance of the success of the tour proposed for this year. But there are other reasons for expecting the new trip to be more valuable than any that preceded. The reasons will become clear as readers carefully peruse the following details of the project:— “In view of the Importance of the inspection journey in the South Seas isles, the “Osaka Mainichi Tokyo Nichi Nichi” is gratified to announce that special facilities have been assured for the party by the communications office.
“The party leaves Yokohama on March 16, and visits Saipan, Tenian, Yap, and other mandated Pacific islands. After stopping at Menado in Celebes, and Thursday Island, it arrives in Australia, where an extensive inspection trip will be made for about a month. After the trip to Australia, the party goes to New Zealand for extensive inspection of the country. The party then crosses the Pacific to Canada, stopping at Suva and Honolulu on the way, “After a brief visit to Victoria, Vancouver, and environs, and travels down the Pacific coast, the party enters the United States and travels down the Pacific coast from the north to the south, spending some time in Seattle, San Francisco. Fresno, Yosemite Valley, Los Angeles, etc. The party will return to Yokohama on July 11. “The total cost of the trip is £455, or approximately 7800 yen, It being understood that the journey will be made always by first-class, be it in the ship, railway, or other means of conveyance, and that only first-class hotels will be used.”
