FAIRLIE
FARMERS’ UNION A meeting of the Fairlie Branch of the Farmers’ Union was held in the secretary's office, on Saturday. The secretary of the St. Andrew’s Branch wrote asking for a suggestion re dealing with the small bird pest. Mr Campbell said he thought that through the local bodies discontinuing to purchase eggs, that the birds had increased considerably and that much damage had been done year to grain and' fruit. He proposed that local bodies be urged to adopt the old custom of purchasing the eggs and heads of sparrows. The motion was carried. The question of dealing with noxious weeds was also discussed. Mr Campbell proposing that it be a recommendation to the Executive to approach the Unemployment Board with a view to having unemployed men used for the purpose of checking noxious weeds. Mr Whatman brought up the question of the canvasser visiting the district, he thought it was very necessary that the District should be canvassed in the interests of the Union. Mr Campbell moved that arrangements be made in conjunction with the Crown Tennants’ Association to arrage for an address to be given by Dr. Weston of Lincoln College on the Dairy Restriction Bill and Mortgage Corporation Bill. DEBATING CLUB The monthly meeting of the Fairlie Debating Club was fairly well attended. Mr C. J. Talbot presided. The subject of the evening’s debate was "That the present restriction on free speech is undesirable.” The affirmative was taken by Messrs D. Barnes and Keith Campbell and the negative by Messrs C. H. Whatman and F. C. Isitt. The thoroughness with which the arguments were presented reflected credit on the speakers. The affirmative was awarded the decision by a fair margin.
