LIBEL ACTION
FOUR DETECTIVES AWARDED DAMAGES
By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, March 9. The sum of £SO was awarded to each of four Wellington detectives by Mr W. F. Stilwell, S.M., as damages in their libel action against the “New Zealand Sunday News.” The plaintiffs were Detective-Sergeant W. Tricklebank and Detectives F. Hayhurst, F. N. Robinson and W. R. Murray. The article was published on January 19. Inter alia, Mr Stilwell said that the rank of detective involved onerous and exacting duties and a high standard of conduct was expected of him. Engaged mainly in the detection of crime, he must rely very materially on the co-operation and assistance of the community in his inquiries. He became well-known by reason of his activities and any unjustifiable attack on his reputation, code of conduct, and ability to discharge his office exposed him to hatred and contempt, gravely imperilling his efficiency and undermined his mana as a police officer. Costs in each case amounted to £6/13/-.
