BOWLING
NORTH OTAGO WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT
The North Otago women’s bowling tournament was brought to a successful conclusion on Friday, when the finals of the pairs and rinks competition were played. The day was marred by a cold wind, but the weather appeared to have but a slight effect on the standard of play. The pairs competition was won by Mesdames Sparrow and Seddon (St. Clair), and the rinks by Mesdames Wallis, Haworth, Hunt, Maclaren (West End, Timaru). When the tournament was concluded, the president of the Phoenix Ladies’ Club (Mrs A. C. Forrest) thanked competitors for their support, which had been mainly responsible for the success of the tournament. She expressed appreciation of the assistance given by Mr T. Herron (green supervisor), Mr J. Marshall (greenkeeper), and Mr D. H. Thomson, who organised and carried out the secretarial duties at the tournament. The ladies were indebted to Mr N. H. Colquhoun, Mr Thomson and the men’s club for their generous gifts of trophies. The tournament had been a very enjoyable one, and she trusted the visitors had spent a very pleasant time in Oamaru. Mr A. C. Forrest (president of the Phoenix Club) made the presentation of the trophies, and all joined in hearty congratulations to the winners and runners-up on their creditable performances. On behalf of the ladies, Mrs Forrest presented Mr Thomson with a floating bowl in appreciation of his work.
