PIPE BAND CONTEST

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The committee arranging the forthcoming New Zealand Highland Pipe Band contest in Timaru met last night. Present: Messrs W. Duncan (chairman), R. Oliphant, J. A. Hay, A. H. Clemens, A. G. Williamson, J. Stevens, R. A. Rodgers, J. Halliday, W. D. Hume. S. R. Burns, A. M. Miller, A. Mathieson and the hon. secretary (Mr J. Glass). The chairman thanked “The Timaru Herald” for its assistance with publicity when the committee recently advertised that special trains would run from Waimate and Fairlie if sufficient inducement offered. The secretary reported that all shields and trophies associated with the contest were to hand and were on display in Stafford Street. It was reported that it had been arranged that a special train would leave Christchurch at 8.10 a.m. on the day of the contest, stopping en route. The train was scheduled to arrive at Timaru at 11.6 a.m. The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) was accorded a vote of thanks for a contribution of £2/2/- towards the contest prize funds. It was decided to commence the contest at 1.30 p.m. with the Drum-Majors’ display, which was expected to conclude at 3 p.m., followed by the quick step and massed bands’ display at 3.15, and the selections in the evening at 8 o’clock.

The executive agreed to ask the Mayor and Mayoress to present the prizes, and to ask the Mayor to give the bands a civic reception. The admission to the grounds in the afternoon was fixed at 1/- for adults and 6d for children, grandstand 6d, and 1/- for adults and 6d for children in the evening.

Captain R. P. Harper, D. 5.0., M.C, D.C.M., of Geraldine, was appointed to assist Lieutenant J. H. SinclairThomson in the judging of dress at the contest.
