KENNEL NOTES

(By “Mastiff.”) “Mastiff” will be pleased to answer questions, which may be addressed C/o The Timaru Herald,” relative to dogs. The afternoon parade being held on Saturday in the beautiful grounds of “Came,” Sealy Street, will have many attractions. Besides the classes for every breed of dog and puppy there will be classes for dogs owned and shown by children including best sporting dog, best non-sporting dog, smallest dog and best groomed dog entered. At the conclusion of the judging there will be a grand parade for all prize winners. Mrs R. H. Rhodes and the Kennel Club extend an invitation to all interested in dogs to attend. The parade will start at 2.15 p.m. Entries can be made with the secretary, Mr H. J. R. Somerville, on the grounds before judging commences. Anyone wishing to parade dogs and who is not a member can also have his membership arranged. Afternoon tea will be provided and it is hoped that all members and their friends will be present at this, the first parade of the season.

Miss Leila Greig, of the Chingford Kennels, is shortly expecting a litter of Alsations from her well known ch. Flash of Arnavems ex ch. Wixun of Resarf. The last mating of this pair produced some notable prize winners in the puppy classes. Miss Margot Hall, of Hororata, has purchased from Mr F. G. Saville, of the Opihi Kennels. the imported Sealyham terrier bitch. Deganwy Dorcas, a litter sister to the well known Deganwy Rex. Miss Hall intends breeding for sporting purposes Mr Lindsay Gordon, Clive, has had his typical Sealyham bitch, Fordon Sadie on a stud visit to Deganwy Rex. Mr E. Steers, Holme Station, has purchased from the Opihi Kennels at Fairlie, a fine old English sheepdog puppy from Opihi Bruinhilde of Pastorale, ex King Robert. Fleas on Dogs During hot weather fleas breed very rapidly, but it is by no means necessary for all dogs to be infested with fleas. If a dog is known to be infested with a large number of pests it is necessary to have recourse to a good bath with a good disinfectant soap, after which all dead fleas and eggs must be diligently brushed and combed or picked out of the coat. But this is not enough, it is also necessary to destroy all possible eggs or insects in the dogs’ kennels and and bedding. These must be kept scrupulously clean and some good disinfectant, such as Jeyes or Chenol, should be freely used and old bedding burnt. A little oil of eucalyptus sprinkled on the bedding is useful. In many cases it is not desirable to wash a dog. especially if he is a hard-coated dog of good breed as it softens the coat. In that case apply fresh pyre-thrum powder, rubbing it well down into the skin. The fleas, stupified by the powder will drop out of the coat, therefore the dog should be stood on a good area of newspaper where the fleas can be easily collected and destroyed—a vessel containing Jeyes’ Fluid should be put ready into which the insects can be dropped. Every inch of the body should be treated and finally the powder well brushed out of the coat. With the puppies the pyre-thrum powder can be used in the same way, care being taken not to allow it to get within the eyes.

The very great importance of keeping dogs free from fleas, also lice, will be fully recognised when we find that recent researches have shown both these parasites to be intermediary bearers and hosts of the tape-worm.
