QUILTING FOR ROYALTY

Quilting done by miners’ wives of Durham and Wales in their own homes from traditional patterns going back to Tudor times has attracted the attention of royalty. Queen Ena of Spain has a Welsh silk quilt, blue one side and pink the other. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret have quilts, one pink and one blue, and Princess Marina is to have one of the new “breakfast-in-bed” covers as a wedding present. These, as shown in Sir Philip Sasoon’s ballroom in Park lane, are made of washable silk or fine cotton, and are intended to be slipped over an ordinary pillow for the bedtime meal. Pelmets, bedroom slippers .washable car rugs, evening coats and “throws,” to cover the feet while resting, are quilted by women from the ages of sixteen to eighty.
