CARNIVAL MOOTED

WAIMATAITAI BATHS DEBT The initial step towards the organisation of a large carnival to pay . off the debt of £443 on the new Waimataitai jubilee baths were taken at a meeting of North End residents last night when a committee was set up to arrange a public meeting to discuss details of the project. Mr G. H. Andrews, who was voted t-0 the chair, explained that the meeting had been, called by the Jubilee Baths Oommittee to find means of raising funds to pay off the indebtedness on tne baths. All were pleased that the baths were completed and glad that the North End Swimming Club had been successfully formed. The money had to be found, for the Borough Council had to be paid by March 31. Any ?F° r L would re duire the co-operation of the School Committee, Ex-pupils’ Association, who were responsible for the movement, and the North End Ratepayers’ Association. They were all pledged to pay the money off and he was pleased to see representatives of those bodies present. The questions to be decided were the nature of the function and date on which it was to be They would also have to decide whether they would hold it at the school or on the Bay. As the committee would be handing over to the Council an asset worth practically £2OOO, he thought they might be able to obtain the use of the Bay Hall for a nominal rate. If the Bay Hall were procured other bodies could be brought in and something worth while could be done. The last carnival at the school had brought in £360, but of that the school children had gathered £l9l after a year’s work. They should aim at £SOO and should get that sum if a carnival were run for four or five nights The swimming clubs had already expressed their willingness to assist. After a general discussion Messrs S H. Sullivan, C. E. Hassall, G. Green G

G. Lewis, C. Johnston, A. M. Parker and A. Paterson were appointed a committee, pro tern, to organise a public meeting in February to consider details of a function to be held in March.
