RUBBER FACTORY

TIMARU INTERESTED The fact that a large rubber manufacturing concern would possibly be erecting a large factory in New Zealand in the near future, and that Timaru was fully alive to the desirability of the industry having it New Zealand headquarters here, was mentioned at last night's meeting of the Timaru Borough Council by the Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterth waite). The Mayor said that last month Mr Toogood. Consulting Engineer, of Wellington. was in Timaru and he took the opportunity of interviewing him with regard to sites that might be suitable for the purpose of a rubber factory, which, it vas understood, the Goodyear Company proposed erecting —it would employ about 300 hands and use a considerable amount of electricity and water. On Saturday, Novem’.er 17, in company with the chairman of the Power Board (Mr G. Dash) and others, sites were visited, one in the Borough, near Marchweil Street, and another particularly suitable site at Washdyke, and had since then given full information in regard to rates, electricity charges, water supply, drainage and everything that might be of value to the company when deciding sites. The Mayor said he had been informed by Mr Toogood that as soon as the Head Office Representative arrived his attention would be directed to the advantages Timaru had to offer, but these must bear a close comparative analysis after a detached consideration but that whatever is done we could rest asured that the site which in the total offered the greatest advantages would be chosen. He thought that everything that could be done had been dono to bring the advantages of Timaru under the notice of the Company, and we could only now hope that it might be our good fortune that the Company would establish its factory in Timaru of which there is no more suitable distributing centre for the South Island.
