STANDARD RATES
REQUEST BY UNEMPLOYED The following resolution passed at a meeting of relief workers and their wives in Timaru on November 19, was forwarded to last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council: —“That a subsidy be paid on all jobs engaging relief labour.” As the Council was at present employing men on work, such as the Scenic Reserve job it was trusted that the matter of subsidising the wages paid by the Unemployment Board for this job. would be given further consideration by the Council. Councillor P. C. Vinnell said he was in favour of standard rates of pay under the present unemployment system. If the Council had to have standard rates the men would have to be classified for the different jobs. The relief system was at present exploiting the position. He believed that the work of the Council should be organised in a proper way, the men receiving the conditions they were entitled to ana the ratepayers value for what tne> were paying. ... The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaitei said that the matter had been discussed before by the Council who had decided against it. The question of providing standard rates of pay on such a job as the Scenic Reserve could be considered, and a certain sum might be placed on the estimates. To pick out 100 men from the 800 unemployed in Timaru to take that work, would, however, be a very difficult task. The Council passed on to the next business.
