KENNEL NOTES
(By “Mastiff.”) “Mastiff” will be pleased to answer questions, which may be addressed C/o “The Timaru Herald,” relative to dogs. Mrs F. J. Cook. Timaru. has recently received from Mr Ivan Petfie. of Oamaru. a very promising black Cocker dog puppy, Rex of Glasnevin by the well known stud dog Churchleigh Druson (Imp) from Gypsy Avonne, which was shown at the Canterbury Kennel Club Show last week and although only five months old he did well in the puppy classes against strong competition. Ch. Witch of Iliner, the well known Sealyham bitch leased by Mr F. G. Saville, Fairlie has whelped a nice litter of five, three dogs and two bitches, by Deganny Rex (Imp.), The puppies are typical specimens and their career will be watched with interest. The Canterbury Kennel Club Show proved a great success and although the entries were slightly fewer owing to the recent distemper scourge, the variety of the dogs shown was greater and the general quality better. The judge of all breeds was Mr H. Hinchcliff of Wellington, a well known North Island judge of considerable experience. The largest entries this year were in 1 the Cocker Spaniel classes and there was an exceptionally large entry of Bulldogs and this breed is rapidly coming into popularity once more. The premier award for the best dog in show went to a magnificent Irish Setter, Kerry Bos’un owned by Mr Peterson of Nelson, formerly of Timaru. An outstanding winner was an English Setter, Bracken of Beechwood owned by Mrs R. Y. White of Styx who gained eight firsts and was made best Setter of three varieties, English, Gordon, and Irish and he also was made best Setter in the show. Although only 12 months old he has a very fine record. Only four South Canterbury fanciers were represented, Miss Helen Kerr's Old English Sheepdog, Opihi Rupert was the best of his breed, and ! won the hon. Sporting Dog Stakes in a big class, besides numerous specials. Miss Leila Greig’s Flash of Amaveme was best Alsatian bitch in the show. Mr D. E. Duncan’s young Scottish Terrier bitch, Glenshee Jill was best puppy of its breed. Mr F. G. Saville’s Sealyham dog, Deganny Rex was best Sealyham. Sore Feet So many dogs in the hot weather seem to be troubled w r ith sore feet, and although he licks them himself there are numerous ways of helping the sore ; pads. For cuts and bruises on the ! pads, paint the affected parts with iodine and then make him rest. You can bind them up with some soft cloth and tie firmly so as not to let him | shake it off. Cysts, however are ! probably the cause of most foot I trouble. They cause swelling between j the toes. In the early stages you can cure cysts by painting them with iodine for three days, not more or you may cause cracking. If the iodine fails try fomentations and when the swelling bursts, clean the wound thoroughly. Distemper Teeth One of the unfortunate after effects of distemper is bad teeth. Many dogs’ I teeth are so affected as to spoil them i lor showing. If the teeth are kept | clean during the period of the disease, this trouble may be avoided to a large I degree. Once a day the teeth should ! be brushed with an ordinary toothbrush, using any good tooth paste. Rub the teeth gently, and yet carefuly avoid the gums, as it is often just above the gums that the teeth go mostly owing to the infectiou of germs there. A dog in good health will also benefit by this treatment each day.
