The swimmers Kiyokawa and Sakagami sailed to-day for Australia. They are confident of holding their own. Representatives of the Boy Scout movement also sailed, taking gifts for the scouts of Sydney and Melbourne, a gigantic hollow paper carp, which is the Japanese symbol for the manly spirit to overcome all obstacles, and which is flown from poles by millions of householders throughout Japan at the boys’ festival on May 5.
