NORTH CANTERBURY
By Telegraph —Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. November 14. Business was practically at a standstill during Carnival Week, and time has been too limited since to allow much resumption. There is no inquiry for any particular product, and there is a general easing tendency varying from slight to quite pronounced. The present indications are for good crops, and a carry-over off high-priced seeds is to be avoided. The slackness in the prices relates more to small seeds, and in the absence of actual business in most classes quotations are nominal. The English quotation for cowgrass removes any chance of business on present prices. There has been a decline, however, in quotations, and values are 7d per lb for farmers’ dressed. Though cocksfoot stocks are very small, there is practically no inquiry. The high price ruling throughout the season definitely restricted the market for it. There are sellers of ryegrass but very few buyers. Good weight seed has been selling at Bluff at 4/- a bushel f.0.b., s.i. The drop from the peak price is from 6d to 9a a bushel. Ryegrass Is about the only small seed of which there is any weight on hand. Shipment of fescut continues spasmodically from the south to America. Fowl wheat is worth 3/8 f.0.b., s.e. The prospect of a very much reduced wheat yield has had no influence on values Oats are worth 2/6 f.0.b., s.i., for A Gartons. and 2/3 for B’s, but there is little interest in this product. The northern market for potatoes is about over for the season. A boat leaves port this week, hut her cargo of potatoes is expected to be very small. The following are quotations for produce paid to farmers on trucks, free of commission, sacks extra, except where otherwise stated:— Wheat—Milling (.interim payment), Tuscan 3/11.
