METROPOLITAN TROTS

INDIANAPOLIS QIVES A FINE DISPLAY

HAROLD LOGAN SHOWS HIS GREAT QUALITY

(Special to “The Timaru Herald’’) CHRISTCHURCH, November 9. The Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Carnival meeting was concluded in brilliant weather, with all conditions favourable for fast and interesting racing. The attendance by mid-afternoon was up to the usual Show Day dimensions, and the totalisator returns were £39*428/10/-, compared with £42,761/10/- on the third day last year. The total for the meeting was £109,320, or £4631 less than in 1933. Nell Volo featured the opening event by trotting 3.16 after a break at the start, and Wrecker followed this up by a brilliant win in the next race after dropping back into a seemingly hopeless position. The sensational race of the day, however, was the Christchurch Handicap, in which Indianapolis beat a strong field after giving a great display of almost free-legged pacing. His hobbles broke two furlongs after the start, and he lost 20 or 30 yards as a result. Glenrossie, who finished second, broke at the start, and put up a wonderful effort to get second money; and Roi l’Or, not driven with perfect judgment, finished third on a punctured tyre, and after receiving a check when Lindbergh broke. The Dominion Handicap, resulted in a popular win for the ancient Hinds trotter Trampfast, who outstayed the opposition in the run home.

The meeting concluded on a wave t of enthusiasm when, in the Free-for- 2 All, Harold Logan and Roi l’Or again ( demonstrated their superiority over the I other adult pacers and the winner, the e most popular horse ever seen at Ad- I dlngton, was accorded a great ovation. £ Harold Logan, Including trophies, has t now won nearly £10,500, and hi spite of t his twelve years he is probably better 1 than at any time in his career. 1 Following are details of the racing:— 1 i GOVERNOR’S HANDICAP, 1 Of 250 sovs (3.22); li miles. 1 4 New Metford, 36 (J. this stage Nell Volo had picked up the 24 yards she threw away at the start. Commencing the final lap Teviot Downs had increased his advantage to eight lengths from King’s Voyage and New Metford, with Lough Guy, Garner and Nell Volo close up. Going down the back Teviot Downs was six lengths to the good, with New Metford three lengths in front of the favourite. The leader was collared a furlong from home, and New Metford hung on to win by a length and a half from Nell Volo, who beat Teviot Downs by a length. Great Way, Lough Guy and First Wrack finished together, five lengths further back. Nell Volo trotted 3.16, but from post to post she broke 3.13, and would have won if she had commenced correctly. New Metford had been placed'on each previous day, and reaped the reward of his consistency. A Wonderful Recovery. Fourteen lined up to the tapes in the 2.46 Hornby Handicap, but speculation was mainly confined to Wrecker 1976, Peter Locanda 1790, Worthy Light 1424, and Craganour 1096. Muriel de Oro, Wrecker, Belinda and Royal Drusus all broke or were interfered with early. Colonial Boy and Eureka Boy were first away, and at the stand Eureka Boy, Colonial Boy, Craganour, Harvest Child, Muriel de Oro, Somerby, Master Roy, Worthy Light, and Peter Locanda were fairly well bunched. Tempest was running behind them and before reaching the back was interfered with and sent back by tiring horses. Eureka Boy, Colonial Boy, Craganour, and Harvest Child held their places along the back and round the home turn. Then Tempest, who was in an apparently hopeless position half a mile from home, was seen making a brilliant run on the outside, and finishing with a torrent of speed the favourite got up to win by two lengths. There was an exciting contest for the other places, Harvest Child securing the verdict by a head from Colonial Boy, who beat Somerby by the same margin. Eureka Boy and Master Roy were next. Indianapolis a Champion. Indianapolis, with his foot much improved, was produced again in the Christchurch Handicap, and following Cup form backers declared for Indianapolis 4399, Blue Mountain 2063 and Roi I’Or 1085. Rollo and Glenrossie both broke at the start, and Lindbergh at the end of a furlong. Blue Mountain, Kingcraft, Ayrmont Chimes, Silver de Oro and Sunny Morn comprised the leading division at the end of two furlongs, and at the stand the leaders were Blue Mountain, Kingcraft, Sunny Morn, Silver de Oro, Impromptu, Sir Guy, Rollo, Roi l’Or, Indianapolis, the two last-named having lost some ground. At the mile (2.8 4-5) Blue Mountain was two lengths clear of Kingcraft, Ayrmont Chimes, Sunny Morn and Silver de Oro, with Sir Guy, Impromptu, Roi l’Or and Indianapolis next, this being the order at the beginning of the last lap except that Ayrmont Chimes had weakened. Blue Mountain. Impromptu and Silver de Oro led along the back and to the far turn, where they had a break of three or four lengths on Sir Guy, Roi l’Or and Indianapolis. Roi l’Or and Indianapolis streaked round the top turn and straightening for home they were just behind Blue Mountain and Silver de Oro. Roi l’Or was driven to the front soon after reaching the straight, with Indianapolis on his wheel, and in the run home Indianapolis drew away and won by two lengths from Glenrossie, who came from the back and beat the tiring Roi l’Or by two lengths. Silver de Oro was half a ; length further back, just beating Blue ! Mountain.

Sprint to Vesuvius. I Betting was better spread on the 1 nine acceptors in the mile Sprinters’ I Handicap. Mountain Dell 1669 was 1 first pick, from Pegaway 1505, Gold Tinge 1409, Roddy 1376. and Avernus ] 1190. Gold Tinge and Arethusa broke at the outset and lost their places. I Pegaway, Probationer, George Rey and I Vesuvius led along the straight, and ( passing the stand the reading was ( George Rey, Pegaway, Probationer, r Avernus, Vesuvius. George Rey turned ] into the back three lengths clear of ] Pegaway, then came Probationer and s Avernus, and Vesuvius. Vesuvius moved ] up at the far turn and two furlongs from home George Rey and Vesuvius ■ were just showing clear of Pegaway, with Mountain Dell moving up on the , outside. Vesuvius ran to the front ‘ when the straight was reached and won by two lengths from Mountain Dell, who beat George Rey home by a , length. Pegaway was a head away, with Roddy and Avernus next. Won From End to End. ] There were six well-backed candidates—Real Burton 2265, Fernbrook Lass 1336, William Tell 1300, Mocast 1144, Rey Spec 1125 and Prince Author 1012—in the Australasian Handicap. ( the slow class two-mile race. Bracken , and Goldfield broke early in the race. Prince Author, Real Burton and Pronto Bingen were in front for the first mile i 2.13 1-5), Prince Author then claiming an advantage of three lengths from the other pair, with Mocast, Golden Direct and Margaret Chenault some lengths away. Beginning the last round Prince Author maintained his three lengths lead from Real Burton, Margaret Chenault, Mocast, Rey Spec, Royal Chenault and Golden Direct. The only change along the back was that Rey Spec gained ground, and racing across the top Prince Author was three lengths in advance of Real Burton and Rey Spec, with Margaret Chenault and Mocast next. Prince Author was never challenged and romped home three lengths ahead of Real Burton, who was a clear length in front of Rey Spec. Margaret Chenault was a poor fourth. Trampfast Comes Back. A small but select field of trotters contested the Dominion Handicap. Worthy Queen 3440, Nicoya 2393, Writer 1700, Huon Voyage 1387 and Trampfast 1088 were all well in the betting. Biddy Parrish began slowly and broke on the first turn, where Huon Voyage, Stanley Bingen and Worthy Queen followed her example. Writer led along the back the first time from Nicoya, Trampfast, Wrackler and Olive Nelson, the field being well spaced out. With a round to go the reading was Writer, Nicoya, Trampfast, Worthy Queen, Wrackler. Huon Voyage, and along the back it was Writer, Nicoya, Trampfast, Huon Voyage, Worthy Queen. Writer was done with three furlongs from home, and Nicoya trotted across the top followed by Trampfast, Huon Voyage and Worthy Queen. In the straight Trampfast went after Nicoya and running him down a furlong from home, defeated him by three lengths. Huon Voyage was two lengths behind Nicoya, with Worthy Queen a length further back. Elvo Again. Willow Wave 2223 and Elvo 1965 headed the betting on the Lyttelton Handicap, but Sure, Queen Author, Taxpayer, Wild Guy and Gay Gordon all topped the thousand. Willow Wave, Mountain Ore and Purser all broke at the start and dropped to the rear, and any chance they then possessed was wrecked when Willow Wave broke again and interfered with the other two nearing the mile post. Queen Author and Elvo, Nelson de Oro and Sure, Linella and Wild Guy, Gay Gordon and War Paint had paired off at short intervals after half a mile had been covered, and they were still racing that way at the mile (2.16 3-5). With a round to go Elvo and Queen Author were together, then came Nelson de Oro and Sure, followed by a row of three—Linella, Wild Guy War Paintclear of Gay Gordon and Cloudy Range. After the usual struggle at the far turn, Elvo and Queen Author were carrying on from Sure, Cloudy Range and Gay Gordon. Queen Author stuck to Elvo until half a furlong from home, then Elvo forged ahead and won by a length from Gay Gordon, who got through near the rails to beat Queen Author by half a length. Sure was a length further back attended by Linella, Cloudy Range and Wild Guy. Elvo gave a very solid display, as she was out setting the pace at the end of two furlongs and always looked a winner over the last circuit. Harold Logan's Success. Indianapolis was struck out of the Free-for-All, leaving Tempest to carry the Barton colours, which he did with . distinct credit. Harold Logan, who was reserved for this event, was made a hot favourite (3378 units) from Roi l’Or (1040), who had had a hard mace ear- ■ lier in the day. Impromptu showed in • front for a few strides and then Harold Logan took charge from Impromptu \ and Red Shadow. At the mile post the . order was Harold Logan, Impromptu, . Roi l’Or, Red Shadow and Tempest, , and passing the stand the reading was I Harold Logan, Impromptu, Roi I’Or, • Sir Guy, Tempest and Red Shadow : pretty closely bunched. Harold Logan - led into the back from Impromptu, Sir . Guy, Roi l’Or and Tempest, but two l furlongs from home the favourite’s : nearest competitors were Impromptu, r Roi l’Or and Red Shadow. On turning > into the straight Harold Logan streak - , ed away and won by three lengths from l Roi l'Or, who was not driven out when / an attempt to overhaul the champion - proved unavailing. Tempest collected i third money a length behind the WaiD mate horse with Glenrossie half a 1 length away. Harold Logan simply 2 outclassed the opposition and exploded the theory that he was unable to win from the front.
