BOXING

NEXT WEEK S BOUT As definite advice has been received that the Australian champion Ambrose Palmer will visit New Zealand next January, added interest is being taken in the meeting of Alan Campbell and Maurice Strickland next week. Along with champion Ray Nicol the contestants in the coming contest are the outstanding heavyweights in New Zealand. Both Campbell and Strickland have challenged Nicol, so it is practically ac3ured the winner will be awarded a title match with Nicol. From a boxing viewpoint the contest should prove a great attraction, for both men adopt the open style of fighting. Campbell favours the open style of fighting, which is equally true of his opponent. The Timaruvian should prove the faster, and with his undoubted knowledge of ringcraft prove a difficult opponent for the Wellingtonian. Strickland continually seeks to get on top of his opponent, looking to provide an opening for his devastating right. That the young Wellingtonian can punch was demonstrated in his bout with Ray Nicol, whom he sent to the canvas on two occasions. With two well matched opponents, apart from the bearing on future contests, the coming contest should prove a great attraction. Owing to the importance of the contest and a local boxer being engaged, an outside referee will control the contest.
