GOLDEN WEDDING

A happy gathering of relatives assembled at the residence of Mr and Mrs S. H. Pierce. Hilton, on the occasion of their golden wedding. Mr and Mrs Pierce were married at St. Mary’s Church. Geraldine. 50 years ago, by Rev. James Preston. After the wedding breakfast the cake was cut by Mrs Pierce and their health proposed by Mr F. Drake. A sister and brother of Mrs Pierce, who were bridesmaid and best man 50 years ago were present. Mr and Mrs Pierce are the oldest residents of the Hilton district. Mrs Pierce came to Hilton in 1875 with her parents, Mr and Mrs L. H. Rooke. who came to Canterbury in one of the first four ships. Mr Pierce came to Hilton in 1878. soon after he arrived in New Zealand, in the ship Strathallan from Kent. England. He worked for Mr J. Kelland. When Mr and Mrs Pierce were married they went to Fairlie and later to Rangitira Valley. In 1895 they purchased Mr Rooke’s farm at Hilton, where they have resided ever since.
