Foot and Mr A. D. Mcßae, in St. Patrick’s Hall, on Tuesday. The visitors were welcomed by Bro. Mnrcellin, who presided. In congratulating the new club on its formation, Mr Foot said he believed a new era was dawning in amateur athletics. Fundamentally the sport to be a success hinged upon a thorough understanding of the meaning of the word "amateur.” which meant a person who participated in any branch of science or sport for the love of it. A well-trained body, he said, would furnish a mind of strength purity and nobility. If he did not believe this fact he was sure many citizens would not give up their leisure time to take an interest in sport. The nation, civilisation and the Church depended upon virile manhood, for on them rested the whole future responsibility of civic, political and national life. He had found amateurs to be thorough gentlemen. Some young men who had trained as good amateurs had been lured from the ranks by big money. Amateurs were in the sport for the love of It, and he believed the St. Patrick’s branch would foster that spirit. In conclusion, Mr Foot conveyed the Centre’s greetings to the Rev. Father Murphy and Bro. Marcellin for their interest in the work.
