TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

SIX RECORDS BROKEN New record figures were established for no fewer than six events at the Timaru Technical High School sports, which were held at the Caledonian Grounds in glorious weather yesterday, and one other record was equalled. The performance of the pupils are all the more meritorious when it is considered that after the recent wet weather the tracks were holding and it is reasonable to assume that, given more assistance from the turf, several of the times put up would have been bettered. Taken all round, the athletic standard shown at the fixture was high. J. O’Connell, who carried off the boys’ senior championship by a margin of four points from O. Davey, created new figures for the 220 yards, cutting out the sprint in 25 seconds dead and clipping 2-5 of a second off the record established last year. The same runner equalled the record of 10 4-5 seconds for the 100 yards, which was a smart performance on a heavy track. Two jumping records in the boys’ section also went by the board, O. Davey clearing 38ft in the senior hop. step and jump, which was 5 inches better than the existing distance, while P. Lyons added Ift Bin to the junior long jump figures, clearing 16ft liin. Yet another record was improved on when W. Cague threw the cricket ball 89 yards lft lHin. the previous record being lft 10.Un short of that distance. New time for the junior girls’ 220 yards was established by Kathleen King, who registered 31 2-5 seconds for the distance, compared with 32 seconds, the record made in 1930. The sixth record to be broken for the meeting was the junior girls’ long jump, Zoe Ivey clearing 13ft sin and adding lft 4in to the previous best jump. Championships were won as follow:
