MANAGER FAREWELLED
MR C. S. HAMMOND HONOURED At the close of business yesterday the staff of Pyne, Gould Guinnes Ltd. met to bid farewell to Mr C. S. Hammond, who had been in charge of the Timaru, Waimate and Fairlie branches of the company for the past four years, and who leaves to-day on promotion to the managership of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd. at Christchurch. Mr C. E. Shallcrass, a former manager of Timaru office, voiced the regret with which the staff were parting with Mr Hammond, who had set such a splendid example to all during the trying times through which they had been passing, and thanked him for the consideration which he had shown the staff at all times. After referring to one or two brighter incidents, which had occurred during the years, Mr Shallcrass welcomed Mr W. A. Fleming, of Ashburton, as manager. He then presented to Mr Hammond, on behalf of the combined staffs and with most sincere good wishes a canteen of cutlery, expressing a hope that it would serve to remind Mr and Mrs Hammond of their stay in Timaru. Inside the case was a sum of money with which the Hammond children could obtain something as a reminder of their childhood days in Timaru and of the occasion of their father’s transfer to Christchurch. Mr Hammond said that during the past few days he had been called upon to accept from other sources gifts which would serve as reminders of his pleasant stay in Timaru, and having on a previous occasion received a gift from the Timaru staff, he felt that this time an expression of good wishes would have been all that was necessary, however, whilst he accepted the present on behalf of himself, Mrs Hammond and the children with the deepest gratitude, it made an adequate reply much harder as it laid emphasis on the bonds which had been formed through the years and which were now being severed. Mr Fleming took the opportunity of thanking Mr Hammond for his help since he came to Timaru, and also the staff for the hearty reception they had given him. He hoped that he would earn their goodwill in the manner in which Mr Hammond had done. Mr C. S. Hammond was met by the managers of the companies forming the South Canterbury Stock Auctioneers’ and Woolbrokers Association when he was honoured with a presentation. Messrs A. M. H. Shirtcliff (C.F.C.A.), C. B. Marshall (Loan Co. Ltd.), J. J. Heasley (Dalgety Co. Ltd.) and C. E. Shallcrass (Pyne, Gould, Guinness) voiced the regret which was felt at the impending departure of Mr Hammond, after which Mr Anderson (National Mortgage Agency Co. Ltd.), chairman of the Association, asked Mr Hammond to accept with their very best wishes a handsome silver entree dish. Mr Hammond thanked those present for their thoughtful act and very fine present and expressed regret at severing his connection with the Association. Mr W. A. Fleming, the new manager of Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd., was welcomed to the Association and in responding, expressed thanks for the cordial manner in which he had been received.
