REFORMING A DOG
AN ALSATIAN "KILLER" Once a killer but now a lifesaver. That is “Wolf,” a two and a-half-year-old Alsatian dog, which is tenth life-guard on the beach at Tynemouth under the care of his master, Beach Inspector Bailey. “Wolf” was born at Tynemouth and the wolf strain was in him. When his owner took him into North Northumberland he turned killer. He slaughtered sheep, and his owner was given drastic orders. Then Inspector Bailey took charge of the animal, and after a month “Wolf” was a different dog. “For hours he would sit at the water’s edge," the inspector says, “and whenever there was a splash he went straight in to the person who was making the splash. Since then I have been training him to go into the water whenever anyone shouts or splashes. "Recently when several people were rescued from the sea Wolf did his bit and swam out to two girls who were shouting. They were afraid to grab him, and until I swam out he swam around them. When I first got him he would kill cats on sight. Now he plays with a kitten. Yes, Wolf has reformed.”
