LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

AMENDMENT OF UNEMPLOYMENT BILL Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, October 30. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Unemployment Amendment Bill (No. 2) and the Local Authorities Interest Reduction and Loan Conversion Amendment Bill were received from the House, read a second time pro forma, and referred to the Statutes Revision Committee. The Committee reported that it had no amendments to make in the former measure, but in the Unemployment Amendment Bill it recommended the deletion from the Bill of the power of the Governor-General by Order-in-Council to exempt from the emergency unemployment charge on income other than salary or wages any class of women in addition to those already cited in the Bill. It also suggested that unemployment taxation on debentures should not be made restrospective. On the Committee stage, the chairman ruled that the amendments infringed the privileges of the Lower House, and it was decided to send them to the House in the form of recommendations. The Bill was read a third time and passed.
