FLOGGING ORDERED
SALESMAN’S OFFENCE By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, October 30. At the Supreme Court this morning, i John Christie Spence, radio salesman (23), who was convicted on two charges of rape, was sentenced to seven years hard labour and ordered a flogging of 15 strokes with the cat. Mr Justice Kennedy added that the victim of the attack, which took place on the town belt, was under 18 years, but fortunately proved brave in resisting to the limits of her physical power, but the prisoner overcame her by smothering her cries till she was insensible. It was a terrible ordeal for a girl to be from 8 p.m. to 3 ajn. under the domination of the irresponsible brute the prisoner proved himself to be. Such crimes were fortunately rare, but when they did occur with such violence, they called for that punishment which, in addition to imprisonment, the legislature had provided. His Honour added that there was no suggestion in the evidence of encouragement on the part of the girl, whose character and that of her mother, appeared to be above reproach.
