LICENSED TRADE TOURNEY SOUTH ISLAND FIXTURE The South Island Licensed Victuallers’ Association staged Its first golf tournament at Highfield yesterday, and the fixture was an outstanding success from every viewpoint. The tournament was strongly supported by representatives of the licensed trade from all parts of the South Island, the entries totalling 24. Competition was divided into two sections, retailers and wholesalers, and in both departments close contests resulted. A feature of the tournament was the many fine trophies presented for competition, no fewer than 18 events being decided on two rounds of play. The most consistent player was L. McCormack (Dunedin), who made a clean sweep of events in the retailers’ section and who also won the trophy for the best gross score over 36 holes in both sections. Owing to the conditions governing the tournament, no player was allowed to receive more than two trophies, so a good deal of adjustment was necessary in the retailers’ division. Competition in the wholesalers’ section was keener. A. B. Duncan (Christchurch) and E. W. Hasell (Christchurch) tied in the morning medal and bogey matches, Duncan winning both events on a recount of the last nine holes. T. E. James (Wellington) carried off the afternoon medal and bogey, A. P. Greenfield (Tlmaru) being runner-up in each case. Hasell returned the best gross aggregate for the 36 holes, while Duncan won the handicap event. A teams match was won by the wholesalers, whose first four men aggregated 639, against the retailers’ 656. Best scores

Drewitt presiding. After the loyal toast, the “North and South Island Golf Association” was proposed by Mr T. E. James, who said that the aim of the Association in the South Island was to bring together the members of the Association in goodfellowship, and golf or any sport was one of the best means of attaining this end. It was hoped to bring members of the “trade” together and to enable them to get to know one another, and so help each and every branch. The toast was replied to by Mr F. Cross, who contended that Mr James could speak authoritatively, having seen the benefits of the Association in the other Island. He paid a tribute to the work done by Mrs O’Leary, Mr James and Mr McLeod. He also expressed thanks to the Timaru Golf Club for the excellent manner in which it had treated the Association. The remarks of Mr Cross were endorsed by Messrs F. H. Drewitt, D. Fraser (on behalf of the North Island), and A. P. Greenfield. The toast of “The Donors of Trophies” was proposed by Mr P. Coyle, who thanked all donors for their generosity and called upon Mrs O’Leary to reply. “I am proud to have assisted with the formation of the Association, and to be .associated with the men in it,” said Mrs O’Leary. She expressed a desire that this would be the forerunner of many such gatherings, and hoped that many more would be present. Mr F. F. Drewitt replied on behall of the donors, and thanked all visitors and local men who had made the tournament such a great success. They had all had a good day, in excellent .company, and had been a help to each 'fother.

The trophies were then presented by Mr F. F. Drewitt. Other toasts honoured were: “The Outgoing and Incoming Committees," proposed by Mr James and replied to by Mr Wardell; “The National Council of the Licensed Trades,” replied to by Mr Coyle; “The Timaru Newspapers,” proposed by Mr A. p.
