GRIM ATROCITIES IN SPAIN

GHASTLY EXCESSES BY REBELS STERN MEASURES TO RESTORE ORDER United Press Association —By Eiectrio Telegraph—Copyright (Received October 29, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 29. The Madrid correspondent of “The Morning Post” says: The first uncensored message since the revolt furnished details of “atrocities that shame Europe,” and the wholesale destruction of life and property in Asturias during the fifteen days’ barbarous government by the Socialists and Communists is beyond description. Groups of rebels have fled to the mountains, apparently with the intention of conducting guerilla warfare. Military courts are busily trying the rebels, but there will be no executions until all the sentences are passed, when the Government will review the cases. Over 2500 were killed during the revolt and thousands were wounded and maimed. The damage in Oviedo totalled at least £5,000,000. The rebels, in some cases, tied the police and priests to trees, when sticks of dynamite were placed at their feet, and exploded, murdering them. The bodies of twenty-six priests have already been traced. The Canon at Oviedo had his eyes plucked out. The nude body of a priest was exhibited in a butcher’s window labelled pork, 10 cents a kilo. The Serrouxs Government is triumphant, and must now punish the culprits, and re-establish law and order. There are many smouldering embers.
