MEMBER PROTESTS

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE REPRESENTATION # Exception to the Mackenzie County Council having a representative on the Timaru Unemployment Committee was taken at a meeting of the Committee last night by Mr G. T. Koller, who asked the secretary how many Timaru unemployed were working under the Mackenzie County Council, and how much money was paid through the Committee to the Council. The Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) said that he could answer the question. There were no Timaru unemployed working in the Mackenzie. Mr Koller asked why, if such was the case, the Mackenzie County Council had a representative on the Committee. The Mayor said that all the County Councils were represented. It was pointed out that the Waimate County Council did not have a representative, the Mayor replying that they had a committee of their own. Mr J. G. Leckie: There is one in Fairlie, too. The Mayor: Does not the postmaster do the work? Mr Leckie: No. Mr Koller said that the representative of the Mackenzie County Council had a vote .... The Mayor: And he always exercises it in an intelligent manner. Mr Koller said that if it was what the representative of the Mackenzie County Council had to say that counted it would not matter, because he would not influence anyone, but it was his vote that counted. “If he has used it during the last 2h years to keep me out, then I am going to try to return the compliment. lam going to protest against the Mackenzie County Council having a representative on this body.” The Mayor: They are quite rightly represented on the Committee. Mr J. McCort said that he had been forced to the conclusion that Mr Koller was like a good many more people who expressed their opinion more forcefully than politely. He had set out to find something he had lost and had found a mare’s nest.
