MUNICIPAL BAND
A GRADE SOLO COMPETITIONS The A grade section of the Municipal Band’s solo competitions was held in the Scottish Hall last night when 17 competitors faced the judge and gave some splendid interpretations of such fine solos as “Sweet Spirit, Hear My Prayer” (Nordische), “Rule, Britannia.” “Silver Threads,” “Concertante,” “The Thorn,” etc. The judge, Mr J. Annand. said that Abraham, who won the trophy given by Mr F. Smith, had painted a picture. Light and shade, with wonderful technique, was a feature of his performance. The second prize went to Fred Smith (cornet), who played Hartmann’s “Rule. Britannia.” showing fine technique and rubato. There was not one poor performance. He had been told to expect fine playing, and he had not been disappointed. He felt, however, that more light and shade was necessary to the finished player. He remarked upon the safe playing of No. 14. R. Cummings. This lad is 13 years of age, and is making great progress. The trophies were presented by the conductor, who congratulated the winners and thanked Mr J. Annand for his kindness in coming down and giving the boys the benefit of his experience. Mr Annand, he said, was no stranger to Timaru, having played with the band here in 1913, T 4, and T 5. He was new conducting the Christchurch Municipal Band ■with marked success.
