Mr N. Johnston (Christchurch) is staying at the Grand. Mr A. T. Wells, Receiver of the Mental Hospitals Department, Wellington, is in Tirnaru on departmental business. Professor J. N. Collie, formerly of the University of London, arrived at Auckland by the Rangitiki last week on a holiday visit. Mr L. R. C. Macfarlane, of Christchurch, a member of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board, has returned home after a visit to England. Dr. G. F. Rich, M. 8., Ch.M. (N.Z.), F.R.C.S. (Edin.), superintendent of the New Plymouth Hospital, has been admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Mr G. W. Hutchison, Mayor of Auckland, left on Friday for Sydney. He expects to reach Melbourne on November 5 and will be the guest of the Centenary Council. Messrs C. A. Cooper, K. Tovey, J. W. Burt (Christchurch), D. Johnston (Dunedin), T. E. James and C. Robinson (Wellington) are staying at the Empire. Among the official party attending the opening ceremony at Waitaki hydro works on Saturday were Sir Francis Bell, Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and the Hon. W. H. Hayward, and the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre. Mr H. B. S. Johnstone (chairman of the Waimate County Council) and Mr George Murray (chairman of the Mackenzie Council) were among the official party at the opening of the Waitaki hydro-electric undertaking on Saturday. Messrs W. N. McClelland, C. Burrows, M. S. Cowper (Christchurch), G. Murray (Braemar), W. P. Spencer (Spencerville), E. A. Bowman, J. A. Bowman, W. A. Virtue, A. E. Inch and C. E. P. Inwood (Oxford) are registered at the Dominion. Messrs G. R. Gregory, A. B. Duncan, E. W. Hasell (Christchurch), H. Phillips (Waikari), J. Cornaga (Auckland), F. Trapski (Pukerau), B. C. Basstian (Invercargill), D. Deans (Darfield), P. Coyle (Wellington) and A. E. Simmons (Dunedin) are registered at the Grosvenor. Mr J. Hutchinson, editor of “The Otago Daily Times,” Mr A. E. Lawrence, editor of “The Tirnaru Herald,” Mr D. McLennan, editor of “The Tirnaru Post,” Mr H. Me. Vincent, editor of “The Sun,” and Mr Andrew Bums, editor of “The Christchurch Star.” were included in the official party at the opening ceremony at the Waitaki works on Saturday. The Public Service Commissioner has appointed Mr C. N. Haslam, of Invercargill, to the position of senior inspector of schools at New Plymouth as from the beginning of February next. The Commissioner had also appointed Mr S. J. Irwin to the position of senior inspector of schools at Invercargill. The Mayor of Tirnaru (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) and the Mayor of Waimate (Mr George Dash), Mr J. H. Hart (chairman of the Electricity Committee, Tirnaru), Mr G. T. Dawson (chairman of the Tirnaru Harbour Board) and Mr Orr-Walker, Resident Magistrate in Tirnaru, were members of the official party at the opening of the hydro works at Waitaki on Saturday.
