CHRISTCHURCH 8.7 Telegraph Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. October 26. The week has been an exceptionally quiet one in the potato trade. This week’s ship for the north is the Waipiata and is due to sail to-morrow, but it is not expected that she' will have many potatoes to pick up. Auckland prices .for new potatoes are still at a figure which suggests old season’s potatoes being w’anted for a few weeks yet. Whites are w’orth £2/7/6 f.o.b.s.i. and Dakotas up to £2TS/-. There is some inquiry for the latter from Wellington. Values to farmers for whites are about £l/5/- and for Dakotas £l/10/- a ton. The oats market is unchanged, values being from 2/7 to 2/8 for A Gartons, Lyttelton. There is no local inquiry and overseas business now seems unlikely to recur. Fowl wheat continues firm at 3/8 to 3 9 f.0.b.5.e., there being occasional inquiries from the north. The small seeds market shows no change, and values remain firm. DUNEDIN By Telegraph—Pres? Association DUNEDIN, October 26. Little business is now being transacted in milling wheat as practically all lines have been sold out of first hands. The fowl wheat market is very quiet. The value for best quality is 3/9 a bushel, sacks extra ex store. The oat market remains quiet with few' orders coming in. Quotations are on the basis of 2/7 f.o.b.s.i. for A Gartons and 2/3 for B’s. Farmers are asking 2/- a bushel, sacks extra, on trucks. The ruling offer for lots in the country is 1/9 for A’s and 1/6 for B's. Trade in chaff is of small compass. Sales are being made at up to £4/5/a ton. sacks extra, ex store. Little interest is being shown in potatoes. New potatoes are arriving from Auckland and Otago. Grow’ers are commencing' to send forward supplies in increasing quantity. Old potatoes freshly picked over are worth £2/10/- a ton, sacks included, ex store. A quiet period is being experienced in the seed markets. Merchants are holding fair stocks, but the wholesale market during the last few w’eeks has been dead. A GOOD YEAR By Telegraph—Press Association INVERCARGILL. October 25. At the annual meeting of the Permanent Investment and Loan Association of Southland this evening, it was stated that during the year £35,220 14s 8d had been advanced. The net advances now stood at £156,632 Is 9d, being a net increase of £6747 0s 9d, and loans granted but not paid out amounted to £B4OO. These figures disclosed a decided improvement. The net profit for the year was £3234 19s 9d. to which had been added the balance forward £B6O 10s 2d, making a total credit of the profit and loss account of £4095 9s lid, which it was proposed to apportion as follows: —Dividend 5! per cent on capital A shares £2320 3s 6d; credit C shares, 5! per cent, £541 7s; transfer to security depreciation reserve, £339 10s; balance to carry forward, £894 9s sd. The general reserve account stood at £15,500, in addition to which the association would then have a £IOOO security depreciation reserve.
