WINCHESTER

CARD TOURNAMENT There was a good attendance at the final of a series of card tournaments organised by the social committee of St. John’s Church. The prizes for the evening were won by Mrs W. E. Knight. Mrs W. J. Moore, Messrs L. Hobbs and A. G. Kimber. The aggregate prizes, which were given by Mrs J. C. South, Messrs J. D. Parker, L. 11. Orbell and W. Bradshaw were won as follows: —Women: Mrs W. E. Knight (114 points). Mrs J. C. South (108>. Mrs Frank South (91); men—Mr N. South (97), Mr A. G. Kimber (96), Mr W. E. Knight (90). Mr L. H. Orbell thanked the people for attending the socials. The attendance had been smaller than in previous years, and it seemed to him that the same people attended year after year. Mr Orbell also thanked the donors of the aggregate prizes; the hostesses and Mr Frank South for supplying milk all the season. Mrs P. Surridge received a present for attending to the supper. Dance music was supplied by Miss Doreen Opie. Extras were played by Mr G. South and Mr W. Priddle. Mr W. E. Knight was master of ceremonies. BIBLE CLASS SOCIAL On Tuesday evening, the members of St. Peter's (Temuka) Bible Class were the guests of the members of the St. John’s Bible Class and the teachers of the Sunday School. The evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions. Miss Margaret Scott danced a sailors’ hornpipe, and a tap dance, for which she was deservedly applauded. Mrs A. B. Scott supplied music for the dance. Supper was laid on tables down the centre of the Sun- j day School. Mr Randel Heron, on behalf of St. Peter’s, returned thanks to the mem- I bers of St. John’s for their hospitality j and the enjoyable evening. The Rev. , A. C. K. Harper, who replied on behalf j of St. John’s, said the friendly spirit j that prevailed that evening, should be , encouraged. The Rev. C. L. Mountfort was master of ceremonies.
