GRASS GROWING CONTEST

SUPPORT LACKING The grass growing competition, open to pupils attending South Canterbury primary or secondary schools, was not accorded the same support this year as on previous occasions, only one exhibit being received, but attention to grass growing has not been allowed to wane, so far as the country schools are concerned, and good work along these lines is still being accomplished. The exhibit which came forward from Douglas Talbot, Claremont, was a very good one, including perennial ryegrass and red and white clover. The exhibit brought out the special features which the research departments have been trying to foster in order to keep up, and, if possible, improve., the standard in New Zealand, and to-make it a pasture seed growing country. The exhibit also Included a fine specimen of crested dogstail, a grass not usually cultivated, but which is suitable for permanent pasture on the downs country of South Canterbury. The essay sent in with the exhibit showed keen Interest and close and sustained observation.
