MARQUESS SHOT
CURSE ON OLD FAMILY RECALLED ANOTHER UNTIMELY DEATH United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph—Copyrigh t (Received September 26, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 26. Slipping on the stone floor of the gun-room at his home at Portiaw, County Waterford, Ireland, the Marquess of Waterford accidentally discharged his rifle and was killed. The accident occurred when he was about to leave the house at daybreak with the intention of shooting rabbits. The famous “Waterford curse” doomed seven heads of the Beresford family to untimely deaths. The sixth Marquess, who was accidentally drowned in 1911, was the seventh head of the family and it was then declared that the curse was lifted. At the inquest a doctor gave evidence that the position of the wound proved that the Marquess could not have touched the trigger and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
