WARMER WEATHER CHANGE APPRECIATED Yesterday the thermometer reached its highest point this season of 74 degrees, and the weather was gloriously sunny. Farmers heartily welcome the seasonable weather after the recent boisterous spell, and are availing themselves to the full of the opportunity to proceed with all branches of agricultural work. Lambing is fairly advanced and indications point to percentages well above the average. The warmer atmosphere will be specially welcome to dairy farmers in promoting spring growth. TRAMPING CLUB A trip to the Pareora Gorge was made on Sunday by the Waimate Tramping Club. A party of 30 went by bus to Holme Station where they were met and welcomed by Mr A. S. El worthy whose permission had been obtained to go through his property. The party covered a distance of 12 or 13 miles. From Holme Station the members made their way to the Limekilns, continuing up the Pareora River where a stop was made for lunch. The party then proceeded to the intake dam and returned to Holme Station down the water race by way of the huts. A pleasant time was also spent in Mr Elworthy’s garden before the bus left for Waimate. SAVAGE CLUB The annual “hard up” evening of the Waimate Savage Club to be held to-night promises to reveal many novel features apart from the usual attractive programme supplied by the members. The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) and Borough Councillors have been invited to be the Club’s guests at the gathering. SOCIAL EVENING A card party and dance was 'given last week by Mr and Mrs Stan Bailey, of Morven. in aid of the funds of the Morven Cricket Club. Flag 500 was played, and the prize-winners were Miss J. Wilson, Mr G. Wilson and Mr J. Farmer. Super was served, and dancing and games followed. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss M.' Shepherd and Mr R. Keen. Those present besides the host and hostess were: Mr and Mrs Frank Bailey, Mr and Mrs Horsnell, Mesdames H. Carter, Coulbeck, M. Bailey, Misses M. Shepherd. M. Reid, C. Deadmarsh. S. Hay, C. E. Clarke. REDCLIFF SCHOOL SOCIAL A euchre party and dance in aid of the funds for the school bus was held in the Redcliff School and drew a large number of people. Mr T. Cooney's prize was won by Miss K. Meyers and Mr R. Turnbull’s by Mr W. Bartlett. Consolation prizes went to Miss R. Bartlett and Mr J. Goodwin. A dance followed, Mrs T. Cooney, Mrs A. Bell and Mr A. Ritchie providing the music. GOLF The fifth bogey round which was to have been played by members of the Waimate Ladies’ Golf Club to-day, has been postponed to September 25. The fourball match resulted in a tie between Mrs J. J. Healey and Miss Brownlie and Mrs R. Carleton and Miss Kidd, 3 down. -
