MASKED BEAUTY
When you look in the glass and see a face that appears as if it had not been washed for a week, although it felt soap and water only a few minutes before, it is time for a complexion brightener. Choose an evening when you won’t be interupted, announce that you are “out,” then shut yourself up in your room for half an hour, taking an egg with you. Make this into a paste with fullers’ earth or talc powder, smear it all over the face, round the eyes as well, and then leave to dry. Keep you face quite still during the process. Do not be alarmed when it begins to look like the interior or an extinct volcano. This is all part of the beautifying business. When thoroughly dry and the skin begins to be tight and drawn, remove the mask with cotton wool dipped into witch hazel or a mild astringent—such as a little eau de Cologne in distilled water—and your complexion will be three or four shades lighter.
