SOCIAL GATHERING
MR AND MRS L. T. BROSNAHAN HONOURED St, Patrick’s Hall, Browne Street, was the scene of a pleasant gathering on Saturday night, when the friends of Mr and Mrs L. T. Brosnahan, who are leaving Timaru for Dunedin, gathered to bid them farewell. The social hall, which was tastefully arranged, was filled to capacity. Games were indulged in during the earlier part of the function, after which a presentation was made to the guests of the evening. Mr J. J. McErlane, vice-president of the Timaru Catholic Club, presided, and was supported by the Rev. Father Murphy, S.M., and the Rev. Father Bartley, S.M. The chairman outlined the fine work that Mr Brosnahan had been responsible for during the time he had been president of the Timaru Catholic Club, and expressed the great sense of loss that members, particularly in the literary and debating section, felt at his departure. In the social activities of the Club both Mr and Mrs Brosnahan had taken a very active interest, and the success of the various functions promoted had In a great measure been due to their leadership and. inspiration. The Rev. Fathers Murphy and Bartley also spoke in appreciation of the work of Mr Brosnahan as president of the Club, and thanked him for what he had done in promoting its welfare. They wished Mr and Mrs Brosnahan every success in iheir new sphere of labour. Mr G. T. Koller, on behalf of the Economies Class of the W.E.A., of which Mr Brosnahan had been a member, congratulated him on his welldeserved promotion, and wished him every success in his new position. Messrs J. Batchelor, P. Cronin, and N. Collins, also expressed regret at the loss the Club would feel at the departure of Mr and Mrs Brosnahan, whom they wished every success in their new home. The chairman then asked Mrs Brosnahan to accept a crystal set, comprising jug and tumblers, which he said was accompanied by the best wishes of members of the Associated Catholic Clubs. Mrs Brosnahan made brief ecknowledgment. Mr Brosnahan, who received a round of applause on rising to reply, traversed the activities of the club during his term of office and expressed his gratitude to the clergy and members for the co-operation that one and all had accorded him. He regretted leaving Timaru and said that Mrs Brosnahan and he would carry away with them many happy memories of their stay here. Supper was dispensed, after which dancing was carried on, the function closing at midnight with “Auld Lang Syne.” During the evening vocal numbers were contributed by Miss Fountaine, and Mr C. Durning, the accompaniments being played by Miss F. Collins.
