ST. MARY’S CHURCH

MEN’S RALLY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION A men’s rally was held in St. Mary's Hall last night in connection with the Parish festival. The hall was well filled, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The Vicar, Ven. Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, extended a welcome to all present, and expressed pleasure that representative from Pleasant Point, Pareora and Otipua were in attendance. The function meant a great deal to the clergy of the Parish, for while a great deal of the work of the church was done by the women workers, it was encouraging to the clergy to know that they had a loyal body of laymen behind them. Mr Monaghan also expressed pleasure that Mr W. T. Ritchie was able to be with them this year, and he then handed over the chair to him. Mr Ritchie also expressed pleasure at seeing so many present. He said he had not been desirous of taking the position of chairman, and it appeared that the only way he could get out of it was to be ill. This year things were looking much more cheerful, so those present should enjoy themselves more than they had done on any previous occasion. He paid a tribute to the Vicar in having been the instigator of the men’s gatherings, and also eulogised the work of Mr G. H. Andrews who had arranged a very fine programme. During the evening, items were given as follows: Chorus, “God Defend New Zealand.” St. Mary's Men's Club; marc!: Orchestra, under Mr G. A. Booth; instrumental duet, Mr Bob Milligan and Mr Geo. Langridge; song and chorus, “Up from Somerset”, Mr Arthur Wheeler humorous Items, Mr Harry Naylor; song and chorus, “Roaming in the Gloaming,” Mr Jim Duncan; zylophone solo, Mr Arthur Williams; song and chorus, “John Peel,” Mr Razell Wood; instrumental duet, Mr Phil Abraham and Mr Wally Vinnell; song and chorus, “Three for Jack.” Mr Geo. Andrews; quartette, Messrs A. Wheeler, C. Whitehouse, H. Naylor and Rev, Taylor. Mr G. Griffiths also entertained the gathering with conjuring tricks. During the evening opportunity was taken by the Vicar and Mr Ritchie to refer to the impending departure from Timaru of Mr C. S. Hammond, tho speakers eulogising Mr Hammond’s fine service on behalf of the Parish. Mr Hammond suitably acknowledged the reference to his services. Before the function concluded, Archdeacon Monaghan expressed thanks to the ladies for having provided the supper. He also said that it was very pleasing to see so many young men present, which had been due to the enthusiasm of Mr W. W. Baxter. A pleasant evening concluded with the singing of the hymn, “O God Our Help in Ages Past” and the National Anthem. Sunday Schools’ Function. On Wednesday evening, a very enjoyable concert was provided by the Sunday School of the Parish, the Hall being well filled. The programme comprised: Scouts, camp fire. Scouts; teddybears’ picnic, St. Mary's; “The Way to Fairyland,” St. John’s; “O! Soldier! Soldier,” All Saints; play, “Molly’s .Wish,” St. Peter's; dance, “Lazy Bones,” St. John’s; “The Wigwam on the Prairie,” All Saints’; song, “When the Band Begins to Play,” All Saints'; play, “The Witch’s Parlour,” St. John’s. The second half of the programme was taken up with a play by St. Michael’s. During the evening a hymn competition was held, the judge, Mr A. W. V. Vine making the following awards: St. Mary’s 1, St. Peter’s 2, St. Mieh.- : ■' s 3. The Rev. J. Evans, on behalf of the Vicar, thanked the performers, particularly mentioning the work done by i liss H. Kay.
