SATURDAY’S GAMES. The Mackenzie Sub-Union’s competitions were concluded oi) Saturday in fine weather. In the junior grade Sherwood beat Aorangi at Fairlie by a good margin. Mr J. S. Roberts was referee. At Albury Fairlie heat Southern by 17 points to 5 after an interesting game. Southern led 5-0 in the first spell and it was only in the last 15 minutes that Fairlie gained the lead. For the winners tries were scored by Green and Mackintosh. C. Cowan potted a goal and converted two tries and Mackintosh kicked a penalty goal. For Southern Cox scored a try which was converted by Simpson. Mr A. Cox was referee. The result of this game gives Fairlie a lead of one point over Sherwood, and they now hold the Wrn. Scott Cup for the year.
In the senior grade Fairlie travelled to Albury and after a good game beat Southern by 16 to 8. For Fairlie Stevenson, G. Breen, O’Reilly and Manning scored tries, Joe Keenan converting two. For Southern D. Angland and A. Campbell scored tries, Simpson converted one. Mr P. Hun-ter-Weston was referee.
Pirates v. Aorangi. Pirates won the toss and played with the advantage of a strong sun. An Aorangi passing movement was intercepted by O'Dowd, who cleared past the halfway. Pirates took a turn on attack, Kerr leading the forwards to the Blue line, but offside allowed Trotter to clear. Hurst received from Rowan, but was checked by Edge. Robertson and Kerr, however, carried on te the blue 25, where Jacobs drove them back and Cook led the Blue forwards in a good loose rush to Pirates’ territory. From a passing rush Sampson scored in the comer. Trotter failed with the kick. Aorangi 3, Pirates 0. Kerr led the Pirates forwards to the line where hard play followed till Macdonald picked up to score. Cameron failed with the kick. Pirates 3, Aorangi 3. Pirates were penalised for offside and Sims found touch in the Blacks 25, but Stevenson with a good solo effort cleared well past halfway. Cordes returned with a good kick and from a nice passing rush Edge crossed in the corner. Sims missed with the kick. Aorangi 6, Pirates 3. Aorangi immediately attacked but Dick cleared as half-time was called. Shortly after resuming Aorangi made a loose rush and Grear picked up near the line to score a good try. Sims failed with the kick. Aorangi 9, Pirates 3. The Pirates forwards combined in a fine rush to the Blue line where Kerr crossed for a good try. Robertson narrowly missed with a good kick. Aorangi 9, Pirates 6. The Pirates forwards swept to the Blue line where Gray narrowly missed scoring. Trotter received and with a strong run heat several men and sent Jacobs over for a good try. Sims converted. Aorangi 14, Pirates 6. Up and down play followed till Gray put Pirates in a good position and from a loose rush Dick followed up fast to touch down. Robertson failed with the kick. Aorangi 14, Pirates 9. From a passing rush Samson ran through to score behind the posts. Sims converted. Aorangi 19, Pirates B. From loose play in Aorangi’s 25 Gray potted a fine goal making the final score: Aorangi 19, Pirates 13. Mr W. J. Burgess was referee.
