THINGS WORTH KNOWING

Boots are often discarded when the uppers are still quite good. These can be put to various household uses for covering the bases of bulb bowls placed on polished surfaces, for instance. Or stick a strip round the edges of sweeping brushes to prevent damage to paintwork. Use rubber adhesive solution to stick on the rubber. Sleeve seams in thick material can be pressed by placing a rolling pin inside the sleeve and ironing on to this. Pressure is then possible on the actual seam without leaving a mark on the opposite side of the sleeve. Treat your damp wall as follows: Make a varnish of one part of shellac to two parts of naphtha, and covei the damp part thoroughly with it. Wait till the varnish is dry, then paper it with ordinary brown paper under the proper wallpaper. If a nail is dipped in hot water and thoroughly heated before hammering into a wall the plaster will not break. Soap should be bought in large quantities, cut in pieces, and arranged on a shelf so that the air can get to it. It will then dry and harden and waste much less in the water.
