REVIEW OF THE RACING

Verden Again. Adult 276, Verden 220 and Fleeting Glance 161 carried most of the monel invested on the Hinds Hurdles. Verden led over the first jump from Tea Gar- | den and Adult (who jolted his rider j on to his neck), and had established j a nice lead leaving the straight. A bad I jump at the bend cost him some j ground, but at the mile he was still J in charge from Tea Garden and Adult, with Black Duke and Fleeting Glance some distance back. Verden ran to the far turn clear of Adult, Black Duke and Fleeting Glance, Tea Garden having retired, and at the top Verden and Adult were three lengths in front of Black Duke, and they raced to the last obstacle in that order. Adult lost ground at the hurdle, and Verden drew away to win by a length and a half from Black Duke, who finished rather well and beat Adult by three lengths. Fleeting Glance was five or six lengths further back. Placings Reversed. In a field of thirteen in the Moreton Handicap, Knockfin (with four successive wins on the Coast to her credit) was made a pronounced favourite with 328 tokens, there being a drop to Grampian 181. Cheap Money 178 and Jacobin 142. Hostile, War Knight and Knockfin were restive at the barrier, and Hostile, Bella Rosa, and War Knight got the worst of the despatch. Cheap Money, Moonbeam, Top Rank and Knockfin were quickest to move, and at the top Moonbeam and Cheap Money were just ahead of Knockfin, with Top Rank leading the next bunch. Two furlongs from home Cheap Money, Moonbeam, Knockfin and Top Rank were disputing the lead, and Red Dance showed up on the outside. Cheap Money stopped very quickly and Top Rank took charge from Knockfin. In a good finish Top Rank secured the verdict by a neck. Jacobin finished fast and collected third money, but was a length and a half behind Knockfin. Two lengths further back came Doiran and Moonbeam, who seemed to meet with trouble after reaching the straight. Top Rank, ridden by the Washdyke apprentice, E. A. Leckie, carried only £7/10/- and was paying a very big dividend. A lengthy inquiry was held into alleged interference by the winner with the result that the placings were reversed. Another Verdict Upset. The two-year-old Ironside (who is still at Durbar Lodge though sold to an Auckiander) was a strong favourite for the Lyndhurst Trot, carrying 391 tickets against Great Seaman 179, Llewellyn’s Pet 154 and De Soto 134. Fourteen were on the limit, with only Bide-a-Wee 12 yards behind. Insolvent Graham Direct and Bide-a-Wee all broke at the start. Colleen Chenault led out from Great Seaman, Betty Jinks, Llewellyn’s Pet, Don Wrack and Agility, and at the mile the order was Colleen Chenault, Great Seaman, Betty Jinks, Agility, Llewellyn’s Pet. Secret Service, Ironside. Colleen Chenault led Agility, Great Seaman, Betty Jinks, Llewellyn’s Pet and Ironside round the far turn, but at the top De Soto joined in, and at the home turn i Agility, Llewellyn's Pet and De Soto j were together, closely attended ay Great Seaman and Ironside. A great finish resulted in De Soto going past the post in a break a neck in front >f Great Seaman, who beat the consistent Llewellyn’s Pet by half a length, Agility was fourth, two lengths away, then came Ironside and Chudic. An inquiry was held into De Soto's break and again the first and second places were reversed. Grand Review Stays On. The Mayfield Hack Handicap, the mile and a quarter race on the card, saw Star Raider 201, Grand Review 185 and Imperial Spear 165 at the head of the quotations. Grand Review made play from Star Raider. Imperial Spear and Cleaner, but at the mile Star Raider was just clear of Grand Review, with Imperial Spear and Cleaner handy. Imperial Spear went to the front at the far turn from Star Raider, Grand Review, Important and Cleaner, and at the top the call was Imperial Spear, Grand Review, Star Raider. When the straight was reached Grand Review and Star Raider headed Imperial Spear, whose saddle slipped forward, and at the distance. Grand Review was just clear of Star Raider and Cleaner. Grand Review held her own to the end, and won oy half a length from Star Raider, who defeated Nightform by a length. Cleaner was a length further back, with Sibella next. Nightform was at the tail of the field until rounding the home turn, and again finished on strongly. This marked Grand Review’s first success over a mile and a quarter, but she finished second tc Cleaner a week earlier at Washdyke.

Mejibo as Steeplechaser. Only foil- starters paraded for the Dromore Steeplechase, and Punchestown was installed a hot favourite. Punchestovn and Gallivanter ran together to the first hurdle, where Gallivanter had a life, and they were m companj at the stand double, at the second ieg of which Gallivanter fell and stunned his rider. Punchestown went on wel clear of French Fleet, but his jumping was sticky. After passing the far turn Membo ran ip to the leader, and tuning for home he had his head in frort. Membo ran to the last ience two or three lengths ahead of the favourite, aid beat him comfortably by half a dezen length, with French Fleet two lergths further back. This was Membo’s first appearance in a steeplechase, and while the class was not good it vas a satisfactory performance.

Great Star’; First Win ior Season. Water Powir 482 and Greet Star 415 dominated thi betting on the Maronan Handicap. Fnal Shot being third selection with 276. Quietly, Gallant Fox and Ranelagh were troublesome at the barrier, where Grecian Prince was held by an atendant. Drumfire failed to leave thi mark and took no part in the race, (treat Star, Gallant Fox, Quietly and Grecian Prime went off >n front, and at ;he top of the curve, Great Star, Gxllant Fox and Water Power were in :harge. Great Star and Water Power vere first in line foxhome, and the; had the finish to themselves, Griat Star defeating the Washdyke mart by three-quarters of a length. Martianchief was four lengths away, half a leigth ahead of Quietly, with Final Shot next. At Washdyke a week earlier, Grind Review and Great Star finished bcond; on Saturday each went one btter and scared a win, making a good lay for owner-trainer J. H. Prosser. Half-brother to Silver de Oro. For the Winclmore Trot, the final event on the carl, Malvena 352 headed another threeyear filly, Lynley de Oro by seven unis. Harvestin 280, Adsum 266 and Sujerb 248 were others which attracted bickers. Sky Wink and Lynley de Oro Wecked their chances by failing to go iway. Blandford wis quickest oft the nark, but at the end of a furlong the leaders were Wild Dreams, Superb i-id Adsum, and at the mile post WildDx-eams and Adsum were just in front ,f Malvena, Harvestin and Superb. Aisum led Harvestin, Wild Dreams and Bide-a-Wee round the far turn, when the field was well bunched, and comiia to (he home turn Adsum, Wild Drums, Star Vale. Superb, Bide-a-We and Llewellyn’s Pride all had good ciances. Adsum was challenged by Llewilyn’s Pride after the straight was ruched, and weakened under pressun leaving Llewellyn’s Pride to win y half a length

from Bide-a-Wee, who beat Wild Dreams by a length, with Superb half a length further back. The winner is a half-brother to the pony champion Sliver de Oro. His driver appeared to make rather disconcerting use of his whip at the finish.
